One meal a day vs. three light meals… Which is better for weight loss?

Lately, I'm so confused about the number of meals I eat while on a diet.
People around me say that you should eat only one meal a day and go for a long period of fasting to burn fat effectively, while others say that you should eat three small meals a day to avoid binge eating and maintain your weight well.
I'm even more conflicted because some say they are essentially the same if based on the same calorie count, while others say there is a difference in actual practice.
Has anyone tried both methods?
I'm curious which was better in terms of weight loss speed, yo-yo effect, and maintenance!
