Is it possible to lose 5kg just through diet without exercising?

I've heard a lot of talk about losing weight just through diet, without any exercise.
So I'm thinking about trying to lose about 5kg just by controlling my diet.
But what worries me is... I've heard a lot of talk about how losing weight like this can ruin your body shape as you lose muscle, or lead to a sudden rebound effect later on.
Are there actually people who have succeeded in losing weight solely through diet, without any exercise?
