Does alopecia areata tend to recur frequently?

I have experienced alopecia areata, so I am asking about this as well.

It was behind my ears, and since my hair is fairly long, it covered it so it wasn't very noticeable.

I have improved somewhat since treatment, but is it common for alopecia areata to recur frequently depending on one's physical condition? I am worried because I heard that it often appears in the same spot where it previously occurred. I would appreciate advice from those with experience.
