This medication is used to replenish fluids and electrolytes lost due to dehydration or before and after surgery. It also provides energy necessary for patients to aid in recovery. Therefore, it is effective in maintaining fluid and electrolyte balance and improving energy supply within the body.

Precautions

This drug is an intravenous solution containing glucose, and its administration can increase the consumption of vitamin B1, leading to a fatal deficiency of vitamin B1. This medication should not be used in patients with excessive fluid status, storage dehydration, or low serum potassium or high sodium levels. Careful administration is required in patients with impaired kidney function, weakened heart function, hypertonic dehydration, low urine output due to urinary obstruction, diabetes patients, patients with high serum chloride, and patients with very low serum sodium. Excessive or rapid administration of this medication can cause edema in the brain or lungs, peripheral edema, acidosis, and water intoxication. Particularly, rapid administration in neonates or preterm infants can cause water intoxication, so caution is necessary. There is also a risk of thrombosis at the intravenous injection site, so observation is needed. During administration, blood glucose, serum electrolyte levels, and fluid balance status should be regularly monitored. During pregnancy, risks to the fetus and therapeutic effects should be carefully considered, and monitoring is necessary during labor since both the mother and newborn are at risk of hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia. Neonates, especially premature or low-birth-weight infants, require careful management as blood glucose regulation can be difficult, and hypoglycemia can cause severe brain damage. In infants and the elderly, caution should be taken to avoid rapid or prolonged administration, and in the elderly, increased caution is necessary to avoid circulatory overload, especially if there is impaired heart and kidney function. In cases of overdose, diuretics should be used to eliminate excess fluid. Before administration, skin and equipment should be cleaned and disinfected to prevent infection, and it should be warmed to body temperature from a cold state before use. Use immediately after opening and discard any unused medication, administering it slowly via intravenous infusion. To prevent air embolism, care should be taken not to introduce air into the container during administration, and it is advisable to avoid connecting multiple containers in succession.
