Efficacy & effects

This medication is used to replenish necessary fluids during dehydration, especially when the body is lacking hydration. It is also utilized for diluting or dissolving injectable drugs. Therefore, it helps improve symptoms caused by dehydration and assists in the proper administration of injections.

Dosage

Administer 500 to 1000 mL intravenously. The intravenous drip rate should be less than 0.5 g/kg per hour as glucose. Use an appropriate amount for dissolving or diluting the injectable solution. Adjust appropriately according to age and symptoms.

Precautions

Caution should be exercised when cutting this ampoule as glass fragments may be mixed in, especially when using it for children or the elderly. When administering this medication intravenously containing glucose, there is an increased consumption of vitamin B1 within the body, which may lead to a severe deficiency, hence care must be taken. This medication should not be administered to patients with specific conditions such as storage dehydration, fluid overload, hyperglycemia, acidosis, hypokalemia, hyperosmolar coma, and glucose intolerance. Additionally, it is safer not to administer this medication to patients with spinal or intracranial hemorrhage or those with delirium tremens. Patients with tendencies of potassium, phosphorus, magnesium deficiency or conditions such as hyponatremia, diabetes insipidus, renal failure, heart failure, severe malnutrition, thiamine deficiency, sepsis, or severe trauma should be administered this medication cautiously. Administering this medication in large volumes or at a rapid pace can lead to serious side effects such as electrolyte imbalance or pulmonary edema and congestion due to fluid overload; therefore, caution is necessary. Patients with difficulty controlling blood sugar may experience hyperglycemia or renal loss, thus blood sugar and electrolyte levels should be monitored frequently. Long-term use may affect insulin secretion; therefore, if necessary, insulin administration should be considered. The safety of this medication during pregnancy is not established, so it should only be used in cases where absolutely necessary, considering the risks to the fetus, and blood sugar levels of the mother and newborn should be closely monitored during administration at delivery. Newborns, especially premature or low-birth-weight infants, are vulnerable to changes in blood sugar, necessitating careful monitoring to prevent serious health issues from hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia. Elderly patients may have decreased bodily functions, requiring extra caution when administering this medication. Excessive dosages may result in symptoms of hyperglycemia or diabetes, and insulin therapy may be required in such cases. This medication is best not administered as a subcutaneous injection, and after opening, it should be used immediately and any remaining medication should be discarded. During administration, pay attention to infection prevention, and especially in cold conditions, it is safer to warm it to body temperature before use. When mixing with other medications, consider chemical and physical reactions sufficiently and use it immediately, ensuring not to administer simultaneously with blood. Also, to reduce the risk of air embolism, it is important not to connect containers continuously.
