View approved original text

This medication is used to replenish body fluids and electrolytes during dehydration or before and after surgery. It also provides the necessary energy to aid in recovery.

How it is given

Adult administration

For adults, typically administer 500-1,000 mL as a drip intravenous injection. The infusion rate is 300-500 mL per hour (75-120 drops per minute).

Child administration

In children, administer at a rate of 50-100 mL per hour. Do not perform rapid infusion (over 100 mL per hour) especially in newborns or premature infants.

Precautions

This drug contains glucose in intravenous injections, which may significantly increase the consumption of vitamin B1. Therefore, caution is needed as the risk of vitamin B1 deficiency can become serious. It is safer not to use this drug in patients with excessive fluid, storage-type dehydration, and low potassium levels in the blood. It should be administered cautiously to patients with decreased kidney function, weak heart function, severe dehydration, patients who have difficulty urinating due to urinary obstruction, diabetic patients, and those with high levels of chloride in the blood. Rapid or large volume administration of the drug can lead to side effects such as edema in the brain or lungs, swelling of the body, and acidification of the blood. Caution is especially needed when administering rapidly to newborns or premature infants due to the potential for excessive body fluid. There is also a possibility of thrombosis at the site of intravenous injection, so monitoring is necessary. During the use of this medication, blood glucose, blood electrolyte levels, and body fluid balance should be regularly checked to effectively manage health status. In special groups such as pregnant or breastfeeding women, children, and the elderly, the safety of the drug has not been fully established, so it should be used cautiously under medical judgment, particularly considering the impact on the health of the fetus and mother during pregnancy. Newborns and especially premature infants are at high risk of hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia due to difficulty in blood sugar regulation, requiring careful monitoring. Hypoglycemia can cause brain damage or seizures, while hyperglycemia can lead to various complications. Rapid or prolonged administration can be risky for infants and the elderly, so it should be administered slowly at an appropriate rate. In the case of overdose, treatment to manage body fluid levels using diuretics may be necessary. Before administration, skin and instruments should be thoroughly disinfected to prevent infection, and in cold weather, the solution should be warmed to body temperature before use. Any remaining drug after opening should be discarded immediately. During administration, IV injection should be done slowly, and care should be taken to prevent air from entering the bloodstream from the injection container. Continuous use of connected containers may pose risks.
