Sudden calf muscle cramps... If they recur, suspect 'this'
Sudden contraction and stiffness of the calf muscles accompanied by severe pain, regardless of willpower, is called 'local muscle cramp.' This symptom, commonly referred to as 'having a cramp,' can occur not only in the calves and thighs but also in fingers, shoulders, arms, and throughout the body, and can last for several minutes or longer.
Localized muscle cramps are primarily caused by electrolyte imbalances due to dehydration and abnormal blood circulation. Excessive consumption of alcohol and caffeine leads to loss of body fluids and disrupts electrolyte balance, resulting in cramp symptoms. Intense exercise can also cause mineral loss through sweating, disrupting the body's electrolyte balance. Overexertion during exercise can strain muscles and trigger localized muscle cramps.
If muscle cramps occur repeatedly without a specific cause, it is necessary to suspect acute kidney disease, heart or brain disorders, varicose veins, or a herniated disc. The exact relationship between these conditions and muscle cramps has not been clearly established, but it is presumed that factors such as decreased magnesium and calcium levels in the blood that relax and contract muscles, metabolic dysfunction, and nervous system issues may influence them. In addition to these conditions, muscle cramps can also occur as side effects of medications such as antihypertensives and asthma drugs.
If muscle cramps are accompanied by sensory abnormalities or muscle weakness, or if muscle cramps do not subside even when moving the muscles manually, or if muscle cramps recur repeatedly even without movement, it is advisable to undergo a thorough examination. Muscle cramps caused by underlying conditions can be alleviated by treating the primary disease.
To prevent muscle cramps, it is important to properly hydrate and replenish electrolytes, and to strengthen muscles through stretching. Additionally, it is important to frequently move and massage areas prone to cramps, such as the calves and soles of the feet. If muscle cramps tend to occur during sleep, it is recommended to place a pillow under the legs to keep them elevated above the heart.
If a sudden muscle cramp occurs, do not panic and try to relax the affected muscle through massage. When experiencing a leg muscle cramp, keep the leg straight, press the knee with one hand, and slowly bend the toes toward the face with the other hand. Muscle cramps that occur during sleep can be alleviated by pressing the soles of the feet firmly against nearby walls, floors, or similar surfaces.
When tired or having slept poorly
I thought I was having a seizure, haha
It is also important to stay hydrated, and excessive exercise is not good either.
