This medication is used to replenish body fluids and electrolytes during dehydration or before and after surgery. It also provides energy necessary for recovery.
Dosage
Typically, adults receive 500-1,000 mL in a single intravenous infusion. The administration rate is 300-500 mL per hour (75-120 drops per minute).
Precautions
This drug contains glucose when administered intravenously, which can cause a rapid increase in the consumption of vitamin B1. Therefore, there is a risk of severe vitamin B1 deficiency, and caution is required. It is safe not to use this drug in patients with excessive hydration, hypostatic dehydration, or low serum potassium levels. Careful administration is required in patients with impaired kidney function, weakened heart function, severe dehydration, difficulty urinating due to urinary obstruction, diabetic patients, and patients with high serum chloride levels. Rapid or large volume administration of the drug may cause side effects such as edema in the brain or lungs, body swelling, or blood acidification. It is particularly important to be cautious in neonates or premature infants, as rapid administration may lead to problems caused by excessive body fluid. There is also a possibility of thrombosis at the intravenous injection site, so observation is necessary. While using this drug, blood sugar levels, electrolytes in the blood, and body fluid balance should be regularly checked to manage health status properly. In special groups such as pregnant or breastfeeding women, children, and the elderly, the safety of the drug has not been fully proven, so it should be used cautiously under the physician's judgment, especially considering the effects on the health of the fetus and mother during pregnancy. Neonates, especially preterm infants, have difficulty in blood sugar regulation, making them at higher risk of hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia, necessitating careful monitoring. Hypoglycemia can cause brain damage or seizures, while hyperglycemia can lead to various complications. Rapid or prolonged administration can be risky for infants and the elderly, so administration should be done slowly at an appropriate rate. In case of overdose, treatment to regulate body fluids using diuretics may be necessary. Before administration, skin and instruments should be thoroughly disinfected to prevent infection, and during cold weather, it is advisable to warm the drug to body temperature. Any remaining medication should be discarded after opening.
Side effects
Possibility of severe edema (cerebral edema, pulmonary edema, peripheral edema) accompanied by increased blood pressure.
