Is it good to visit the dentist regularly like a check-up?

In the past, I often had cavities, so whenever I felt tooth pain, I would go to the dentist. So, I think I visited the dentist roughly every two years without a specific break. However, in the past five years, I haven't experienced much tooth or gum pain, so I haven't visited the dentist. It's good that I have no dental issues, but on the other hand, I'm a bit worried. I'm wondering if cavities could be progressing unnoticed. Is it better to visit the dentist regularly even when I don't have tooth pain? If so, how often should I go?
