Does drinking a lot of water really help when dieting?

There is always talk about drinking plenty of water.
But I'm not exactly sure why it's helpful.
I've seen claims that it's due to appetite control, and also that it's due to metabolism.
I'm curious if it actually has an effect on weight loss.
It is confusing because everyone says the recommended daily amount differently.
I'm not sure if forcing myself to drink a lot is a good thing, either.
Do I need to drink more on workout days?
I have more questions about drinking water than I thought.
I'm curious how those who succeeded in their diets managed their weight.
