Precautions

This medication should not be used in infants under 24 months of age. It should also not be administered to children with chronic diarrhea or bacterial diarrhea accompanied by bloody stools and high fever. Additionally, it is not used in patients with acute ulcerative colitis or pseudomembranous colitis caused by extensive antibiotic use. It should not be given to patients with significant intestinal disorders such as intestinal obstruction or megacolon, as this medication may inhibit intestinal peristalsis and pose a risk. If symptoms of constipation, abdominal distention, or intestinal obstruction occur, discontinue use immediately. This medication should not be used in patients with a history of hypersensitivity or those with hemorrhagic colitis. Because this medication contains lactose, patients with lactose intolerance or related genetic disorders should avoid it. Patients with compromised liver function should use this medication cautiously, as metabolism may be affected, and careful monitoring for central nervous system side effects is needed. This medication does not treat the cause of diarrhea but alleviates symptoms; therefore, if symptoms do not improve within 48 hours for acute diarrhea or 10 days for chronic diarrhea, stop taking it and consult a physician. To prevent dehydration from diarrhea, adequate fluid and electrolyte supplementation is necessary, with extra caution for children. This medication may cause drowsiness, dizziness, and fatigue, so caution is advised when driving or operating machinery. If abdominal distension occurs in patients with AIDS while taking this medication, use should be discontinued immediately, and no dosage adjustment is needed for patients with kidney disease. This medication may interact with specific drugs, so those taking other medications should consult their physician or pharmacist. It is advisable not to use this medication in early pregnancy unless the therapeutic benefits outweigh the risks. During breastfeeding, it may pass into breast milk in small amounts, hence use is not recommended. Elderly patients, who may have diminished physical function, should adjust their dosage and use it carefully. In cases of overdose, central nervous system depression, respiratory depression, and cardiac arrhythmias may occur, so the prescribed dosage must not be exceeded, and if symptoms arise, immediate medical attention should be sought. The use of this medication in tablet or capsule form is not recommended for children under 7 years old. Finally, while drug dependence is not generally reported with this medication, there may be a risk of dependence in case of overdose, so caution is warranted.
