This medication is used to supplement luteal function as part of assisted reproductive technology (ART) in women with a deficiency of progesterone. It improves the uterine environment necessary to maintain pregnancy, thereby increasing the chances of successful conception.

Dosage

Administer 100mg intravaginally 2 to 3 times a day for up to 10 weeks starting from the oocyte retrieval day. For those over 35 years of age, a 3 times a day regimen is recommended.

Precautions

This medication should be discontinued immediately if symptoms of serious vascular diseases such as thrombotic disorders or myocardial infarction appear or are suspected. There is insufficient scientific evidence to use this medication solely for the prevention of habitual spontaneous abortion; therefore, it is advisable not to use it for this purpose alone. It should not be used in patients with a known allergy to this medication, undiagnosed vaginal bleeding, liver disease, breast cancer, or malignant tumors of the reproductive system. Patients with a history of thrombotic disorders or porphyria should also avoid taking this medication. When using this medication, one must be cautious as gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, abdominal bloating, constipation, and vomiting, as well as fatigue, urinary tract infections, headaches, uterine cramps, and vaginal bleeding may occur. Additionally, symptoms such as irritation, itching, burning sensation, discomfort, hives, and swelling in the vaginal area have also been reported. Prior to starting this medication, it is essential to conduct a cervical cancer screening and breast and pelvic examinations, and to have regular check-ups every six months if used long-term. In case of irregular vaginal bleeding, the cause must be accurately diagnosed, and if the diagnosis is unclear, this medication should not be used. Fluid retention may occur, so patients with epilepsy, migraines, asthma, or heart or kidney disease should be carefully monitored. Patients with a history of depression should be observed closely as symptoms may worsen, and if symptoms are severe, discontinuation of the medication is necessary. Diabetic patients should periodically check their blood glucose levels as this medication may affect blood sugar control. It is advisable not to use this medication in conjunction with other intravaginal medications, and if co-administration is necessary, at least a 6-hour interval should be maintained. If symptoms such as calf pain, sudden shortness of breath, hemoptysis, vision loss, severe chest pain, severe headaches or vomiting, dizziness, fainting, limb weakness, difficulty speaking, or jaundice of the skin or eyes occur, consult a doctor immediately. This medication may cause drowsiness, so caution is required when driving or operating machinery. Co-administration with drugs that induce liver enzymes may reduce the efficacy of this medication, while drugs that inhibit liver enzymes may increase its concentration in the body, so caution is advised. It can be used in cases of early pregnancy luteal insufficiency, but usage during pregnancy can affect the fetus, therefore it must be used under a doctor's directive. During lactation, it is safest not to use this medication as it may be secreted in breast milk. The safety and efficacy in pediatric patients or elderly individuals over 65 years of age have not been fully established.
