This medication helps with weight loss and weight maintenance, that is, weight management. In adults, it is administered to obese patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, or to overweight patients with a BMI between 27 and 30 who have weight-related comorbidities such as prediabetes, hypertension, or dyslipidemia. It is also used to reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events in overweight or obese patients with confirmed cardiovascular disease. In adolescents aged 12 years and older, it is used to assist with weight management in patients with a weight of 60kg or more and obesity corresponding to an adult BMI of 30. This medication is intended to be used as an adjunct therapy alongside lifestyle modifications including caloric-reduced dieting and increased physical activity. Therefore, it is effectively utilized for weight management and improving cardiovascular health.

Precautions

This medication should not be administered to patients with allergies to the active ingredient or excipients. Caution is required for patients in a dehydrated state. This medication may cause gastrointestinal side effects that could reduce body fluid, thereby increasing the risk of impaired kidney function. If there is a history of acute pancreatitis or if symptoms of acute pancreatitis are suspected, this medication should be discontinued, and careful consideration is required for administration in patients with pancreatitis. This medication should not be used as a replacement for insulin in patients with type 2 diabetes, and it should not be combined with other GLP-1 receptor agonists. There may be an increased risk of hypoglycemia when used with insulin or sulfonylureas; therefore, it may be necessary to reduce the dosage of these medications when initiating treatment with this drug. Patients with diabetic retinopathy should be closely monitored for eye conditions during the use of this medication, and it is not recommended for patients with uncontrolled or unstable retinopathy. The safety and efficacy of this medication have not been sufficiently established in patients using other products for weight management, patients with type 1 diabetes, patients with severe renal or liver dysfunction, and patients with heart failure. Therefore, it is not recommended for them. This medication is available for adults and adolescents over the age of 12, but safety and efficacy have not been established for children under the age of 12. Gastrointestinal side effects (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, etc.) are common and may occur more frequently during the dose escalation period. Increased heart rate may occur, so patients with heart disease should use caution. This medication may delay gastric emptying, which can influence the absorption of other oral medications, so it is recommended to consult with healthcare professionals regarding other medications taken concurrently. Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant should not use this medication, and breastfeeding mothers should also avoid it. If any symptoms of depression or suicidal thoughts occur during the use of this medication, it should be reported to healthcare professionals immediately. Use is prohibited in patients with a history of suicidal behavior. This medication must be stored in refrigeration and users must receive proper training on the correct injection method from healthcare professionals before use. In cases of overdose, dehydration and gastrointestinal disturbances may occur, thus evaluation and treatment by healthcare professionals is required if symptoms appear. Dizziness may occur during driving or operating machinery, so caution is necessary, especially for patients with a risk of hypoglycemia, who should be attentive to preventing hypoglycemic episodes.
