Treatment of peripheral and central neuropathic pain, adjunctive treatment for partial seizures in epilepsy, improvement of fibromyalgia
This medication is used for the treatment of peripheral and central neuropathic pain in adults. It is also effective as an adjunctive treatment for partial seizures in epilepsy patients, helping especially when there are secondary general symptoms or not. Additionally, it contributes to the relief of patient's pain in the treatment of fibromyalgia. Overall, it is used in the treatment of neuralgia, epilepsy, and chronic pain syndrome.
This medication is pregabalin, administered orally without regard to food, divided into two doses per day. 1. Neuropathic Pain 1) Peripheral Neuropathic Pain The initial dose of 150 mg may be administered per day, and it can be increased to 300 mg daily after 3 to 7 days. If necessary, it can be increased to a maximum of 600 mg per day at 7-day intervals.
There is insufficient safety and efficacy data for children under 12 and adolescents aged 12-17, so it is not recommended for administration.
This medication may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or behaviors, so mood changes or symptoms of depression should be carefully monitored during treatment. Patients with allergies to pregabalin or any components of this medication should not take it. Diabetic patients may need adjustments in their blood glucose control medications due to weight gain, so caution is required. If symptoms of angioedema appear, immediately discontinue the medication and consult a healthcare professional. Elderly patients are at risk for falls due to dizziness or drowsiness, so care should be taken, especially at the beginning of treatment. Vision may be blurred or changes in eyesight may occur, so patients should report if such symptoms develop. When discontinuing the medication, withdrawal symptoms such as insomnia, headache, nausea, and anxiety may occur, so discontinuation should be discussed with a healthcare provider. Patients with a history of drug abuse may have a high risk for misuse of this medication, so it should be used cautiously. Patients with impaired kidney function may require dose adjustments. Patients with severe heart conditions should take caution when using this medication. When taken with opioid analgesics, there is a risk of central nervous system depression, so caution is needed. Patients with weak respiratory function or elderly patients may have an increased risk of severe respiratory depression, so dose adjustments might be necessary. In early pregnancy, there is a risk of fetal malformations, so it is preferable not to use this medication during pregnancy, and women of childbearing age should use effective contraception. Lactating women should consider the possibility of this medication passing into breast milk and affecting the infant, so they should consider stopping breastfeeding or discontinuing the medication. Activities such as driving or operating machinery should be avoided until drowsiness or dizziness completely resolves. Severe skin reactions may occur, so if any abnormal symptoms such as skin rash or swelling appear, medication should be stopped immediately and consult a healthcare professional. In case of overdose, symptoms like confusion, drowsiness, or depression may appear, and treatments such as dialysis may be required if necessary. Keep out of reach of children and do not transfer to other containers for safety.
