Treatment of peripheral and central neuropathic pain, adjunctive therapy for partial onset seizures, relief of fibromyalgia
This medication is used to treat peripheral and central neuropathic pain in adults. It is also utilized as an adjunctive therapy for patients with epilepsy who have partial seizures, applicable in cases with or without secondary generalized symptoms. Additionally, it helps alleviate the symptoms of fibromyalgia. It is effectively used for various neurological conditions and pain states.
This medication is administered orally in divided doses twice daily without regard to meals. 1. Neuropathic pain - Peripheral neuropathic pain: Start with a dose of 150 mg once daily, which can be increased to 300 mg after 3 to 7 days, and then further increased to a maximum of 600 mg over a period of 7 days. - Central neuropathic pain: Start with a dose of 150 mg once daily, which can be increased to 300 mg after 1 week.
Safety and effectiveness data for pediatric patients under 12 years of age and adolescents aged 12 to 17 is insufficient, therefore administration is not recommended.
This medication may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or behaviors, so if you experience mood changes or unusual behavior during treatment, you must inform your healthcare provider immediately. Patients who are allergic to any components of this drug or have a hereditary lactose intolerance should not take this medication. Diabetic patients should be cautious as weight gain may require adjustments to blood sugar control medications. If symptoms of angioedema occur, the medication should be discontinued immediately. Elderly patients may experience dizziness or drowsiness, increasing the risk of falls, and should be cautious until they become accustomed to the effects of this drug. Temporary blurred vision or changes in vision may occur, which can improve upon discontinuation of the medication. Abruptly stopping this medication may lead to withdrawal symptoms such as insomnia, headache, and anxiety, so it should be discontinued gradually under a doctor's guidance. Patients with a history of substance abuse may be at a higher risk for misuse of this medication and require special caution. Dose adjustments may be necessary for patients with impaired kidney function. Patients with heart disease should be cautious while taking this medication as symptoms of heart failure may occur. When taken with opioid analgesics, the risk of central nervous system depression is increased, so consult with a healthcare provider. This medication may cause dizziness and drowsiness, so caution is advised when driving or operating machinery. In early pregnancy, there is a risk of fetal malformation, so pregnant women should not take this medication, and women of childbearing age should use effective contraception. During breastfeeding, this drug can be transmitted to breast milk and may affect infants, so one should either stop breastfeeding or consult a doctor. In cases of overdose, symptoms such as confusion, drowsiness, and seizures may appear, and treatments such as hemodialysis may be required. Keep this medication out of reach of children, and do not transfer it into other containers. If a skin rash or a severe allergic reaction occurs while taking this medication, discontinue use immediately and inform your healthcare provider.
