Treatment of peripheral and central neuropathic pain, adjunctive therapy for partial epilepsy, improvement of fibromyalgia
This medication is used for the treatment of peripheral and central neuropathic pain in adults. It is also effective as an adjunctive treatment for partial seizures in patients with epilepsy, whether or not secondary generalized symptoms are present. Additionally, it helps alleviate the symptoms of fibromyalgia. It is utilized for managing various neurological disorders and pain, thereby improving the quality of life for patients.
The total daily dose of this medication should be divided into two doses taken orally without regard to food. For neuropathic pain (peripheral and central), epilepsy, and fibromyalgia, the initial dose is 150 mg per day, which may be increased based on the patient's response and tolerance. The maximum dose can be increased to 600 mg per day, although for fibromyalgia, doses exceeding 450 mg per day are not recommended. In cases of renal impairment, dose adjustment may be necessary.
There is insufficient safety and efficacy data for children under the age of 12 and adolescents aged 12-17, so administration is not recommended.
This medication may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or behaviors. Therefore, if symptoms of depression or mood changes occur during treatment, please inform your healthcare provider immediately. Individuals allergic to any component of this medication or with certain genetic disorders such as lactose intolerance should not take this drug. Patients with diabetes should be cautious, as weight gain may require adjustment of blood sugar control medications. If symptoms of angioedema occur, discontinue use immediately and consult a physician. Elderly patients should be careful due to the risk of injury caused by dizziness or drowsiness, especially during the early stages of treatment. Transient visual disturbances or changes in vision may occur. If these symptoms manifest, consult a physician. Suddenly stopping this medication may lead to withdrawal symptoms such as insomnia, headaches, nausea, and anxiety. Therefore, it should be tapered gradually according to a physician's instructions. Patients with a history of substance abuse are at a higher risk of abusing this medication, requiring special attention during administration. Cardiac disease or severe congestive heart failure patients should use this medication with caution, and those with respiratory diseases or kidney disorders may require dose adjustment. When taken with opioid analgesics, the central nervous system depressant effects may be enhanced. During early pregnancy, there may be a risk of fetal malformations, so the medication should not be taken during pregnancy. Women of childbearing age should employ effective contraception. Breastfeeding women should avoid using this medication as it may transfer to breast milk and affect the infant. Care should be taken when engaging in hazardous activities such as driving or operating machinery due to the potential for dizziness or drowsiness. If severe skin rash or allergic symptoms occur, discontinue use immediately and consult a healthcare provider. When storing this medication, keep it out of reach of children and do not transfer it to other containers.
Hives, severe swelling (edema), cold sweat, severe rash with fever, blisters, skin peeling, pain in mucous membranes of the mouth/eyes, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, asthma attacks, respiratory abnormalities with coughing and fever, yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), extreme lethargy, sudden severe headaches, lightning-like headaches, seizures, confusion, visual disturbances, paralysis, significantly reduced urine output, severe swelling throughout the body
