Treatment for hypercholesterolemia (primary, familial) and reduction of cardiovascular disease risk
This medication is used as an adjunct treatment when dietary changes and exercise alone are insufficient for patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia. It is particularly effective for patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia alongside other treatments. It lowers serum total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels, thereby slowing the progression of atherosclerosis, and is efficacious for pediatric patients over 10 years of age who meet specific criteria for familial hypercholesterolemia. Additionally, it serves as an adjunct to dietary therapy in patients with dysbetalipoproteinemia. Furthermore, it helps reduce the risk of stroke, myocardial infarction, and vascular revascularization procedures in middle-aged adults at high risk for cardiovascular disease. It is effectively used for various dyslipidemia and cardiovascular disease risk reduction.
For adults with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia, the initial dose is 5 mg once daily, taken at any time of day regardless of meals. The maintenance dose is 10 mg once daily, and can be adjusted according to LDL cholesterol levels and therapeutic goals with intervals of 4 weeks or more as necessary. The maximum dose is 20 mg per day.
For pediatric patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (ages 10 to 17), the dosage is administered once daily at 5 mg to 20 mg. Dose adjustments should be individualized based on therapeutic goals with intervals of 4 weeks or more.
