Summary

Main use
Treatment and prevention of influenza A and B infections
Who takes it
Adults · Children
Adult dose
Influenza A and influenza B virus infections: Begin treatment on the first or second day after the onset of influenza symptoms. This drug may be administered regardless of food intake; in some patients, taking it with food may improve tolerability. Adults and adolescents 13 years of age and older: Administer 75 mg of oseltamivir orally twice daily for 5 days. Adults and adolescents 13 years of age and older who have difficulty swallowing capsules should use this drug as a powder for suspension. Patients with renal impairment: No dose adjustment is required in patients with creatinine clearance of 60 mL/min or greater. For patients with creatinine clearance of 30 ~ 60 mL/min, a reduced dose of 30 mg twice daily for 5 days is recommended. For patients with creatinine clearance of 10 ~ 30 mL/min, a reduced dose of 30 mg once daily for 5 days is recommended. Patients receiving regular hemodialysis should receive a 30mg dose of this drug after each dialysis session to maintain blood concentrations within the therapeutic range; the treatment duration should not exceed 5 days. If influenza symptoms develop during the 48 hours between dialysis sessions, the dose may be administered before the start of dialysis. For peritoneal dialysis, a single 30mg dose of this drug after dialysis is recommended. The pharmacokinetics of oseltamivir have not been studied in patients with end-stage renal disease who are not undergoing dialysis (e.g., creatinine clearance less than 10mL/min); therefore, no recommended dose is available for these patients. Patients with hepatic impairment: No dose adjustment is required for treatment in adult patients with mild to moderate hepatic impairment (Child-Pugh score ≤ 9). Prevention of influenza A and influenza B virus infections Adults and adolescents 13 years of age and older: For close contacts of an infected person, administer 75 mg of oseltamivir orally once daily for 10 days. Begin administration within 2 days of contact with the infected person. The recommended dose for prevention during an influenza outbreak is 75 mg once daily. The safety and efficacy of this drug have been demonstrated for up to 6 weeks. The preventive effect continues while this drug is being taken. Patients with renal impairment: No dose adjustment is required in patients with creatinine clearance of 60 mL/min or greater. For patients with creatinine clearance of 30 ~ 60 mL/min, a reduced dose of 30 mg once daily is recommended. For patients with creatinine clearance of 10 ~ 30 mL/min, a reduced dose of 30 mg every other day is recommended. Patients receiving regular hemodialysis should receive a 30mg dose of this drug after every 2 dialysis sessions to maintain blood concentrations within the therapeutic range. The initial dose may also be administered before the start of dialysis. For peritoneal dialysis, administration of 30mg of this drug once weekly after dialysis is recommended. The pharmacokinetics of oseltamivir have not been studied in patients with end-stage renal disease who are not undergoing dialysis (e.g., creatinine clearance less than 10mL/min); therefore, no recommended dose is available for these patients. Patients with hepatic impairment: No dose adjustment is required for prevention in adult patients with mild to moderate hepatic impairment (Child-Pugh score ≤ 9).

This medication is used to treat influenza A and influenza B virus infections in newborns and children over the age of 2 weeks, as well as in adults. It is important to start treatment within 48 hours of the onset of initial symptoms of influenza infection. Additionally, it can be used for the prevention of influenza virus infections in individuals aged 1 year and older. However, vaccination is the primary approach for prevention, and this medication is used only as an alternative when vaccine effectiveness is not expected or when vaccination is not possible. Therefore, this medication effectively helps in the treatment and prevention of influenza.

Precautions

This medication cannot replace influenza vaccination and should be used separately from vaccinations. Safety and efficacy have not been established for infections other than influenza A and B. In particular, neuropsychiatric adverse reactions have been reported in children and adolescents, and caregivers should carefully observe this age group for risks of unusual behavior. Individuals with allergies to this medication or its components should not take it. Dose adjustment is required for patients with impaired kidney function, and it is not recommended for patients with end-stage renal failure. Caution should be taken when used in high-risk patients with asthma, chronic bronchitis, or immunocompromised states. During treatment, symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, headache, etc. may occur but are mostly temporary. Rarely, severe allergic reactions, liver function abnormalities, skin rashes, acute renal failure, or neuropsychiatric symptoms may occur, so immediate consultation with a doctor is necessary if any unusual symptoms appear. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should use this medication only when the therapeutic benefits outweigh the risks, and the effects on the fetus or neonate are not fully known. In the case of children, it is advisable to avoid use in those under 1 year of age as safety and efficacy have not been established. Elderly patients can use it without special dose adjustment, but attention should be paid to declines in bodily function. Reporting of severe side effects in cases of overdose is rare, but adherence to prescribed dosage and administration is crucial. This medication has relatively few drug interactions, but caution may be needed when used with certain medications. No special effects have been reported when driving or operating machinery, but declines in ability due to influenza itself should be considered. Keep this medication out of reach of children and do not transfer it to another container.
