Key information summary
Efficacy & effects
This medication is used for various edema conditions such as essential and renal hypertension, cardiac edema due to congestive heart failure, renal and hepatic edema, and acute pulmonary edema.
Dosage
As frusemide, an adult should be administered 20-40 mg intravenously or intramuscularly once daily. If sufficient effect is not observed, increase the dose by 20 mg every 2 hours and administer 1-2 times daily.
Precautions
This medication acts as a powerful diuretic that causes the excretion of fluids and electrolytes from the body. Overdose may lead to severe dehydration and electrolyte imbalance, so regular monitoring is necessary, and the dosage needs adjustment based on the patient's condition. In the case of injection, care should be taken as glass fragments may be present when cutting the glass container, especially when used in children or the elderly. Patients with a known allergy to this medication, specific renal or liver function abnormalities, hypovolemia, or those who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not be administered this medication. Patients with poor urine output, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, liver cirrhosis, kidney disorders, or hypoalbuminemia require stricter observation and management during administration. Sodium, potassium, creatinine, and blood glucose levels in the blood should be checked regularly during the administration period, and additional caution is needed if symptoms such as vomiting or diarrhea occur. Elderly patients have a higher risk of dizziness and fainting due to dehydration or low blood pressure, so administration should start with a low dose while monitoring their condition. This medication may interact with other drugs, so it is crucial to follow professional guidance, especially when taken with heart medications, antibiotics, antihypertensives, or thyroid medications. During pregnancy, it should not be used unless absolutely necessary as it may affect the fetus, and during breastfeeding, it can be secreted in breast milk and may affect the baby, so it should be avoided. In pediatric or premature infants, careful administration is required due to the risk of kidney stones or other side effects. In case of overdose, severe symptoms such as dehydration, hypotension, and cardiac arrhythmias may occur, requiring immediate medical treatment. When administering intravenously, it should be given slowly, and care should be taken as pain or nerve damage may occur at the injection site. This medication may cause dizziness or decreased concentration due to its blood pressure-lowering effect, so it is advisable to avoid risky activities like driving or working at heights.
