Treatment of peripheral and central neuropathic pain, adjunctive treatment for partial seizures, improvement of fibromyalgia
This medication is used to treat peripheral and central neuropathic pain in adults. It is also administered as an adjunctive therapy for partial seizures in epilepsy patients, regardless of secondary generalization. Additionally, it is effectively used to alleviate the symptoms of fibromyalgia. In summary, it helps in the treatment of various neuropathic pain conditions, epileptic seizures, and musculoskeletal disorders.
This medication is taken orally in two divided doses per day without regard to meals. 1. Neuropathic pain - Peripheral neuropathic pain: Starting dose is 150 mg once daily. Depending on response and tolerability, it can be increased to 300 mg once daily after 3 to 7 days, and subsequently increased to a maximum of 600 mg at intervals of 7 days. - Central neuropathic pain: Starting dose is 150 mg once daily.
The safety and efficacy data are insufficient for patients under 12 years of age and adolescents aged 12 to 17 years; therefore, administration is not recommended.
This medication may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or behaviors, hence careful observation for signs of depression, mood changes, or behavioral abnormalities is necessary while on treatment. Patients allergic to any ingredient of this medication should not use it. Diabetic patients may need to adjust the dosage of their blood glucose-lowering medication if weight gain occurs with this medication. If symptoms of angioedema, such as swelling of the face or around the mouth, occur, discontinue use immediately and consult a healthcare professional. Elderly individuals are at higher risk of falling or injury due to dizziness or drowsiness, so they should exercise particular caution at the start of treatment. There may be blurred vision or changes in eyesight while taking this medication; if these symptoms occur, consult a doctor. Suddenly stopping this medication may lead to withdrawal symptoms, such as insomnia, headaches, and anxiety, so adjusting the dosage according to the physician’s instruction is necessary. Due to the risk of drug abuse, patients with a history of drug abuse or psychiatric disorders should use this medication with caution. Patients with impaired kidney function may need to adjust the dosage based on their symptoms in consultation with a healthcare professional. Patients with cardiovascular diseases may experience edema or symptoms of heart failure when taking this medication, so care is required. Caution is advised when taking this medication with opioid analgesics, as it may enhance central nervous system depressant effects, leading to risks such as respiratory distress. In early pregnancy, there is a risk of fetal malformations; hence pregnant women are advised against using this medication, and women of childbearing potential should employ effective contraception during treatment. Breastfeeding women should carefully consider the effects of this medication being transmitted through breast milk on their babies. Caution is required when driving or operating hazardous machinery as this medication may cause dizziness or drowsiness. In case of overdose, symptoms such as drowsiness, confusion, and depression may occur, and immediate medical attention is necessary. This medication should be kept out of reach of children, and transferring it to another container could lead to decreased quality or accidents.
