Summary

Main use
Treatment and prevention of influenza A and B infections
Who takes it
Adults · Children
Adult dose
Treatment of influenza A and influenza B virus infections Initiate treatment on the first or second day after the onset of influenza symptoms. This medicine may be taken with or without food; tolerability may improve in some patients when taken with food. Adults and adolescents aged 13 years and older: Administer oseltamivir 75 mg orally twice daily for 5 days. Adults and adolescents aged 13 years and older who have difficulty swallowing capsules should use this medicine as a powder for suspension. Patients with renal impairment: No dose adjustment is necessary for patients with creatinine clearance ≥ 60 mL/min. For patients with creatinine clearance of 30 ~ 60 mL/min, reduction to 30 mg twice daily for 5 days is recommended. For patients with creatinine clearance of 10 ~ 30 mL/min, reduction to 30 mg once daily for 5 days is recommended. Patients receiving periodic hemodialysis should receive a 30mg dose of this medicine after each dialysis session to maintain blood concentrations within the therapeutic range; treatment should not exceed 5 days. If influenza symptoms develop during the 48 hours between dialysis sessions, the dose may be administered before dialysis begins. For peritoneal dialysis, a single 30mg dose of this medicine after dialysis is recommended. The pharmacokinetics of oseltamivir have not been studied in patients with end-stage renal disease who are not receiving dialysis (e.g., creatinine clearance below 10mL/min); therefore, no recommended dose is available for these patients. Patients with hepatic impairment: No dose adjustment is necessary for treatment in adult patients with mild to moderate hepatic impairment (Child-Pugh score ≤ 9). Prevention of influenza A and influenza B virus infections Adults and adolescents aged 13 years and older: For close contacts of an infected person, administer oseltamivir 75 mg orally once daily for 10 days. Start administration within 2 days of contact with the infected person. The recommended dose for prevention during an influenza outbreak is 75 mg once daily. The safety and efficacy of this medicine have been demonstrated for up to 6 weeks. The preventive effect continues while taking this medicine. Patients with renal impairment: No dose adjustment is necessary for patients with creatinine clearance ≥ 60 mL/min. For patients with creatinine clearance of 30 ~ 60 mL/min, reduction to 30 mg once daily is recommended. For patients with creatinine clearance of 10 ~ 30 mL/min, reduction to 30 mg once daily every other day is recommended. Patients receiving periodic hemodialysis should receive a 30mg dose of this medicine after every 2 dialysis sessions to maintain blood concentrations within the therapeutic range. The initial dose may also be given before dialysis begins. For peritoneal dialysis, administration of 30mg of this medicine once weekly after dialysis is recommended. The pharmacokinetics of oseltamivir have not been studied in patients with end-stage renal disease who are not receiving dialysis (e.g., creatinine clearance below 10mL/min); therefore, no recommended dose is available for these patients. Patients with hepatic impairment: No dose adjustment is necessary for prevention in adult patients with mild to moderate hepatic impairment (Child-Pugh score ≤ 9).

This medication is used to treat influenza A and B virus infections in children aged over 2 weeks (except in children less than 36 weeks post-conception age) and adults. Treatment should be started within 48 hours of the onset of initial influenza symptoms for effective results. Additionally, it can be used for influenza prevention in individuals over 1 year old, but vaccination should take priority. It should only be used when vaccine efficacy is insufficient or when vaccination is not possible. This is not a substitute for vaccination; therefore, vaccinations must be administered concurrently. This medication assists in the treatment and prevention of influenza infections.

Precautions

This medication is used for the treatment and prevention of infections caused by the influenza virus. However, it cannot replace the influenza vaccine and should be used independently of vaccinations. It is effective only against influenza A and B viruses, and safety and efficacy have not been established for other infections. Notably, neurological and psychiatric adverse reactions, such as seizures, delirium, and abnormal behavior, have been rarely reported, necessitating caution during administration, especially in children and adolescents. Generally, this medication should not be used in children over 10 years of age, except in special cases. Since abnormal behavior may occur after dosing, guardians should ensure that the child is not left alone for at least 2 days after taking this medication. It should not be used in cases where there is an allergic reaction to this medication or its components. Patients with impaired renal function require dose adjustment, and it is not recommended for patients with end-stage renal failure. Caution should be exercised in at-risk groups such as asthmatic or chronic bronchitis patients and immunocompromised individuals. The most common side effects include nausea, vomiting, headaches, and are generally transient and mild. Rarely, abnormalities in liver function, skin rashes, neuropsychiatric symptoms, and acute renal failure may occur; therefore, if any unusual symptoms arise, immediate consultation with a medical professional is necessary. This medication has a low likelihood of interaction with several other medications, but caution may be necessary when combined with specific drugs. During pregnancy or breastfeeding, potential therapeutic benefits and risks must be carefully considered. Safety and efficacy have not been established for infants under 1 year old; therefore, its use is not advised. Elderly individuals can use it without specific dose adjustments; however, careful monitoring is necessary due to physiological decline. In cases of overdose, symptoms similar to usual side effects may occur, and immediate contact with a medical facility should be sought. This medication should be stored out of reach of children and should not be transferred to other containers for safety. When taking this medication, it should ideally be started at the onset of symptoms, and if a dose is missed, it should be taken as soon as possible, but if it is too close to the next scheduled dose, it should be skipped. There are no reported effects on driving or operating machinery; however, influenza may affect concentration and response times, necessitating caution.
