Summary

Main use
Treatment of influenza A and B infections; prevention of influenza infection
Who takes it
Adults · Children
Adult dose
Influenza A and influenza B virus infections: Initiate treatment on the first or second day after the onset of influenza symptoms. This medicine may be taken with or without food; in some patients, taking it with food may improve tolerability. Adults and adolescents aged 13 years or older: Administer 75 mg of oseltamivir orally twice daily for 5 days. Adults and adolescents aged 13 years or older who have difficulty swallowing capsules should use this medicine as powder for suspension. Patients with renal impairment: No dose adjustment is necessary in patients with creatinine clearance of 60 mL/min or greater. For patients with creatinine clearance of 30 ~ 60 mL/min, a reduced dose of 30 mg twice daily for 5 days is recommended. For patients with creatinine clearance of 10 ~ 30 mL/min, a reduced dose of 30 mg once daily for 5 days is recommended. Patients receiving regular hemodialysis should receive a 30mg dose of this medicine after each dialysis session to maintain therapeutic plasma concentrations, and treatment should not exceed 5 days. If influenza symptoms develop during the 48 hours between dialysis sessions, the dose may be administered before the start of dialysis. For peritoneal dialysis, a single 30mg dose of this medicine after dialysis is recommended. The pharmacokinetics of oseltamivir have not been studied in patients with end-stage renal disease who are not receiving dialysis (e.g., creatinine clearance less than 10mL/min); therefore, no recommended dose is available for these patients. Patients with hepatic impairment: No dose adjustment is necessary for treatment in adult patients with mild to moderate hepatic impairment (Child-Pugh score ≤ 9). Prevention of influenza A and influenza B virus infections Adults and adolescents aged 13 years or older: For close contacts of an infected person, administer 75 mg of oseltamivir orally once daily for 10 days. Initiate administration within 2 days of contact with the infected person. The recommended dose for prevention during an influenza outbreak is 75 mg once daily. The safety and efficacy of this medicine have been demonstrated for up to 6 weeks. The preventive effect continues while taking this medicine. Patients with renal impairment: No dose adjustment is necessary in patients with creatinine clearance of 60 mL/min or greater. For patients with creatinine clearance of 30 ~ 60 mL/min, a reduced dose of 30 mg once daily is recommended. For patients with creatinine clearance of 10 ~ 30 mL/min, a reduced dose of 30 mg once every other day is recommended. Patients receiving regular hemodialysis should receive a 30mg dose of this medicine after every 2 dialysis sessions to maintain therapeutic plasma concentrations. The initial dose may also be administered before the start of dialysis. For peritoneal dialysis, administration of 30mg of this medicine once weekly after dialysis is recommended. The pharmacokinetics of oseltamivir have not been studied in patients with end-stage renal disease who are not receiving dialysis (e.g., creatinine clearance less than 10mL/min); therefore, no recommended dose is available for these patients. Patients with hepatic impairment: No dose adjustment is necessary for prevention in adult patients with mild to moderate hepatic impairment (Child-Pugh score ≤ 9).

This medication is used for the treatment of influenza A and B virus infections in children aged 2 weeks and older as well as in adults. It is effective when initiated within 48 hours of the onset of infection symptoms. Additionally, it can also be used for preventing influenza infections in individuals aged 1 year and older, but prevention should primarily prioritize vaccination, and this medication should only be used as an adjunct when the effectiveness of the vaccine is absent or if vaccination cannot be performed. This medication cannot replace the need for vaccinations; hence, vaccination should also be considered. Therefore, it is used for both the prevention and treatment of influenza.

Precautions

This medication is used for the treatment and prevention of influenza virus infections. This medication cannot replace influenza vaccinations and is a treatment method separate from vaccination. Its effectiveness has only been proven against influenza A and B viruses, and safety and efficacy have not been verified for other infections. While taking this medication, rare neuropsychiatric reactions may occur in children and teenagers, so special attention should be taken if unusual behavior or seizure symptoms appear. In children aged 10 years and older, it is generally recommended not to use this medication except in special circumstances. If children or teenagers are taking this medication, caregivers should ensure that patients are not left alone for 2 days to prevent accidents from unusual behavior. Patients with hypersensitivity to this medication should not use it, and dosage adjustments are required for patients with reduced kidney function or those on dialysis. High-risk patients such as those with asthma or chronic bronchitis should be administered cautiously. The most common side effects during administration include nausea, vomiting, headache, etc., which are mostly transient and mild symptoms. Rarely, shock, anaphylaxis, liver dysfunction, skin rashes, acute renal failure, or neuropsychiatric symptoms may occur, so immediate consultation with healthcare professionals is necessary if unusual symptoms occur. Pregnant or nursing women should use this medication cautiously, as there is limited data on the effects it may have on the fetus or infant, and should consult with a physician. This medication is not recommended for use in children under 1 year of age due to insufficient evidence of safety and efficacy. Elderly patients may experience reduced physical function, so careful administration is necessary, though specific dosage adjustments are typically not required. This medication has a low likelihood of drug interactions; however, caution may be required when used in conjunction with certain other medications, so healthcare professionals should be informed of any other medications being taken. When taking the medication, starting as soon as symptoms appear is effective, and if a dose is missed, it should be taken as soon as possible. If the next scheduled dosing is within 2 hours, the missed dose should be skipped. Store out of reach of children and ensure it is not transferred to another container.
