Treatment of recurrent acute otitis media
This medicine is used for the treatment of recurrent or persistent acute otitis media in pediatric patients. It is particularly effective in children who have been treated with antibiotics for acute otitis media within the past 3 months, those under the age of 2, or those attending daycare facilities. The drug acts against major pathogens such as Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae (including beta-lactamase producing strains), and Moraxella catarrhalis (including beta-lactamase producing strains). This medicine can improve the symptoms of acute otitis media and prevent its recurrence.
There is no experience of using this drug in adults.
For pediatric patients aged 3 months or older, the dosage is based on the amoxicillin content (600 mg/5 mL) at 90mg/kg/day divided into doses every 12 hours for a duration of 10 days. The dosage based on weight is as follows.
This drug contains the artificial sweetener aspartame, which is broken down in the body into phenylalanine. Therefore, patients with a genetic disorder known as phenylketonuria should not take this medicine. The daily allowable intake of aspartame should be adjusted to be below the recommended levels by WHO, using the minimum possible amount, with a maximum daily dosage for adults being 2.4g. Patients who have had hypersensitivity reactions to any of the ingredients in this drug or to beta-lactam antibiotics should not be administered this medicine. Additionally, patients with concomitant viral infections such as infectious mononucleosis or lymphocytic leukemia, or those with a history of hepatic dysfunction or jaundice caused by this drug or penicillin should also avoid this medication. Since this drug contains lactose, it should not be administered to patients with lactose intolerance, lactase deficiency, or glucose-galactose malabsorption. Patients with hepatic dysfunction or moderate to severe renal impairment should use this drug cautiously and may need dosage interval adjustments. Patients with allergies, those who find it hard to take orally, elderly patients, and those in poor general condition should also be cautious. Patients with gastrointestinal diseases accompanied by vomiting or diarrhea may not absorb the drug adequately, hence they should take it with care. This drug is generally safe, but side effects such as diarrhea, vomiting, rash, contact dermatitis, and others may occur. Especially, diarrhea and vomiting are common adverse reactions that may lead to discontinuation of the drug. In severe cases, symptoms such as pseudomembranous colitis, hepatitis, severe skin reactions, blood abnormalities, renal impairment, and central nervous system abnormalities may occur, so patients should consult a doctor immediately if such symptoms arise. As this drug is a penicillin-based antibiotic, hypersensitivity reactions can be severe, and there is a possibility of anaphylactic shock, so patient status should be closely monitored after administration. If diarrhea occurs during or after antibiotic use, pseudomembranous colitis should be suspected, and administration should be stopped immediately, followed by appropriate treatment. This drug should only be used for the treatment of bacterial infections and is ineffective against viral infections. Even if symptoms improve, it is important to take it consistently for the prescribed duration to prevent the development of resistant bacteria. Shake well before use, store in the refrigerator after preparation, and consume within 7 days. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should carefully consider the risks and benefits of this drug, particularly during the first 3 months of pregnancy where it is advisable not to take it. This drug has not been proven safe for infants under 3 months of age.
