Main use
Treatment and prevention of influenza A and B infections
Who takes it
Adults · Children
Adult dose
Treatment of influenza A and influenza B virus infections Initiate treatment on the first or second day of influenza symptom onset. This medicine may be administered with or without food; in some patients, taking it with food may improve tolerability. Adults and adolescents aged 13 years and older: Administer 75 mg of oseltamivir orally twice daily for 5 days. Adults and adolescents aged 13 years and older who have difficulty swallowing capsules should use this medicine as powder for suspension. Patients with renal impairment: No dose adjustment is necessary in patients with creatinine clearance of 60 mL/min or greater. For patients with creatinine clearance of 30 ~ 60 mL/min, a reduced dose of 30 mg twice daily for 5 days is recommended. For patients with creatinine clearance of 10 ~ 30 mL/min, a reduced dose of 30 mg once daily for 5 days is recommended. Patients receiving regular hemodialysis should receive a 30mg dose of this medicine after each dialysis session to maintain plasma concentrations within the therapeutic range; the treatment period should not exceed 5 days. If influenza symptoms develop during the 48 hours between dialysis sessions, the dose may be administered before the start of dialysis. For peritoneal dialysis, a single 30mg dose of this medicine after dialysis is recommended. The pharmacokinetics of oseltamivir have not been studied in patients with end-stage renal disease who are not receiving dialysis (e.g., creatinine clearance below 10mL/min); therefore, no recommended dose is available for these patients. Patients with hepatic impairment: No dose adjustment is necessary for treatment in adult patients with mild to moderate hepatic impairment (Child-Pugh score ≤ 9). Prevention of influenza A and influenza B virus infections Adults and adolescents aged 13 years and older: For those in close contact with an infected person, administer 75 mg of oseltamivir orally once daily for 10 days. Begin administration within 2 days of contact with the infected person. The recommended dose for prevention during an influenza epidemic is 75 mg once daily. The safety and efficacy of this medicine have been demonstrated for up to 6 weeks. The preventive effect continues while this medicine is being taken. Patients with renal impairment: No dose adjustment is necessary in patients with creatinine clearance of 60 mL/min or greater. For patients with creatinine clearance of 30 ~ 60 mL/min, a reduced dose of 30 mg once daily is recommended. For patients with creatinine clearance of 10 ~ 30 mL/min, a reduced dose of 30 mg every other day is recommended. Patients receiving regular hemodialysis should receive a 30mg dose of this medicine after every 2 dialysis sessions to maintain plasma concentrations within the therapeutic range. The initial dose may also be administered before the start of dialysis. For peritoneal dialysis, administration of 30mg of this medicine after dialysis once weekly is recommended. The pharmacokinetics of oseltamivir have not been studied in patients with end-stage renal disease who are not receiving dialysis (e.g., creatinine clearance below 10mL/min); therefore, no recommended dose is available for these patients. Patients with hepatic impairment: No dose adjustment is necessary for prevention in adult patients with mild to moderate hepatic impairment (Child-Pugh score ≤ 9).

This medication is used to treat influenza A and B virus infections in children over 2 weeks old and adults. It must be administered within 48 hours of the onset of initial influenza symptoms for maximum effectiveness, and is particularly applicable to infants and children. It is also used for the prevention of influenza virus infections in children over 1 year old and adults, but this applies only when vaccination is not feasible and should not replace vaccination. This medication helps alleviate and prevent symptoms of influenza infection.

Precautions

This medication is used for the treatment or prevention of influenza virus infections but cannot substitute for influenza vaccination. It is effective only against influenza A and B viruses, and safety or efficacy against other infections has not been confirmed. Rare neurological and psychiatric adverse reactions, such as seizures or delirium, have been reported particularly in children and adolescents; therefore, patients in this age group should be closely monitored for abnormal behavior. It is generally recommended to avoid using this medication in pediatric patients over 10 years of age unless there is no special risk. During the use of this medication, to decrease the risk of abnormal behavior or accidents, children and adolescents should not be left alone for at least 2 days and should be carefully monitored by a guardian. Patients allergic to this medication or its components should not use it. Dose adjustment is necessary for patients with reduced kidney function, and this medication is not recommended for patients with severe renal failure. Patients with asthma, chronic bronchitis, or immunosuppressive conditions should use this medication with caution. The most common side effects include nausea, vomiting, and headache, which are generally temporary and mild. Rarely, severe allergic reactions, liver dysfunction, skin rashes, acute renal failure, blood abnormalities, and neurological symptoms may occur, and immediate medical attention is required if symptoms appear. This medication shows low potential for interactions with other drugs, but caution is needed when used in conjunction with certain renal excretion-related medications. Pregnant or breastfeeding women must consult their physician regarding the benefits and risks of using this medication. Safety and efficacy have not been adequately established for children under 1 year old; therefore, its use is not recommended. Elderly patients can use this medication without special dosage adjustment, but should be monitored carefully considering declining physical function. Serious side effects have rarely been reported even in cases of overdose, but if abnormal symptoms occur, a medical institution should be visited immediately. This medication should be stored out of reach of children and should not be transferred into another container. Lastly, it is most effective to take this medication early in influenza treatment, and if a dose is missed, it should be taken as soon as possible and then maintained at regular intervals.
