Treatment of chronic hepatitis B virus infection
This medication is used to treat patients aged 16 and older with chronic hepatitis B who have confirmed replication of active virus and persistent elevation of serum aminotransferases (ALT or AST), or have histologically confirmed active disease.
Administer this medication orally on an empty stomach (2 hours after a meal or at least 2 hours before a meal). Administer entecavir 0.5mg orally once daily. Caution is required when administering this medication to patients with liver disease. Especially, patients with severely impaired liver function or decreased kidney function may require dosage adjustment. This medication can cause serious side effects such as liver dysfunction or lactic acidosis, so liver function tests and clinical symptoms should be monitored regularly during treatment. Additionally, abrupt discontinuation of this medication can lead to rapid deterioration of hepatitis B, so discontinuation must be done under a doctor's guidance. This medication is not recommended for HIV-infected patients who are not receiving antiretroviral therapy, and it is important to perform an HIV test before administration. Patients with hypersensitivity to this medication or certain genetic disorders such as lactose intolerance should not take this medication. Pregnant women should carefully consider the risks to the fetus and the benefits of use, while breastfeeding women are advised to discontinue breastfeeding or stop the medication. Taking this medication with food can reduce absorption, so it is best taken on an empty stomach. Patients with decreased kidney function may have accumulation of this medication in the body, hence periodic monitoring of kidney function and possible dosage adjustment may be necessary. This medication may interact with other drugs, especially when taken with medications that affect kidney function, so consultation with a doctor or pharmacist is essential. Long-term use of this medication may lead to the development of resistance, therefore, regular tests should be conducted to evaluate the treatment efficacy. Furthermore, this medication may be administered to children and elderly patients, but careful management should be considered based on age-related physical condition and kidney function. In case of overdose, immediate consultation with medical personnel is necessary, and treatments such as hemodialysis may be required.
