Treatment of gastrointestinal diseases such as gastric and duodenal ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux, and improvement of gastric mucosal lesions
This medication is used to treat various ulcers that occur in the stomach and duodenum, gastroesophageal reflux, as well as recurrent ulcers and anastomotic ulcers following surgery. It is also effective for disorders of excessive gastric acid secretion such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. It helps improve lesions such as erosion, bleeding, redness, and swelling of the gastric mucosa that occur during acute exacerbations of acute gastritis or chronic gastritis. This drug protects the gastric mucosa, reduces inflammation, and alleviates symptoms, thereby improving the quality of life of patients. Therefore, it is used to improve and treat symptoms of various gastrointestinal diseases.
Adults: For cimetidine, take 400 mg orally twice daily (morning and at bedtime) or 800 mg once daily (at bedtime). It can also be taken as 300 mg orally four times a day (after meals and at bedtime). The dosage can be increased up to a total of 1.6 g (400 mg four times a day after meals and at bedtime). For the treatment of gastric mucosal lesions (erosion, bleeding, redness, swelling) in the following conditions: during acute exacerbations of acute gastritis or chronic gastritis, 200 mg should be administered orally twice daily or 400 mg once daily.
Children: Administer orally in divided doses of 20 to 40 mg per kg of body weight daily.
This medication contains the ingredient cimetidine and is used to suppress gastric acid secretion for the treatment of gastric ulcers or gastroesophageal reflux disease. This drug should not be used in patients with allergic reactions to cimetidine or other ingredients, or those with a history of such reactions. Additionally, patients taking dofetilide should not be administered this medication as it increases the risk of cardiac arrhythmias. In patients with decreased kidney function, the concentration of this drug may increase, so caution should be taken by reducing the dosage or extending the dosing interval. Caution should also be exercised in patients with impaired liver function, a history of drug allergies, the elderly, children under 19 years of age, and patients undergoing hemodialysis. In particular, symptoms of gastric cancer may be masked by this drug, so administration should only occur after confirming malignancy status, and patients with Helicobacter pylori infection should undergo eradication therapy. While taking this medication, various side effects such as decreased blood cell counts, liver dysfunction, kidney issues, allergic reactions, gynecomastia, gastrointestinal symptoms, neurological abnormalities, and skin rashes may occur rarely. If these symptoms arise, immediate consultation with a healthcare professional is needed for appropriate action. During treatment, the condition of the disease should be carefully monitored, and if there is no effect, alternative therapies may need to be considered. In particular, the elderly or those with a history of peptic ulcers should have their condition checked regularly, and caution is required when taking with medications that can cause decreased blood cell counts. Additionally, this medication may increase the risk of pneumonia; therefore, special attention is necessary for patients with chronic lung diseases, diabetes, or weakened immune systems. There are many drug interactions; thus, dosage adjustments may be necessary when taken with warfarin, midazolam, diazepam, beta-blockers, antidepressants, antibiotics, and antifungal agents, so it is essential to follow a professional’s guidance regarding dosage control. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should carefully consider the benefits and risks of using this drug, and breastfeeding should be avoided if possible. The safety in children has not been sufficiently established, so it should only be used when necessary, and doses should be adjusted for the elderly due to declining kidney function. In cases of overdose, serious side effects such as respiratory depression may occur, requiring immediate emergency treatment, and it should be stored in a safe place out of reach of children. Finally, this drug has been reported to have weak hormonal effects and some reproductive organ changes in animal studies, but there have been no significant effects on reproductive function in clinical settings.
