This medicine is used for gastrointestinal ulcer diseases such as gastric and duodenal ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease, recurrent ulcers, anastomotic ulcers, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. It also helps improve lesions such as erosion, bleeding, redness, and swelling of the gastric mucosa appearing during acute exacerbations of acute gastritis and chronic gastritis. This medicine protects the gastric mucosa, reduces inflammation and bleeding, alleviates symptoms, and is beneficial for gastrointestinal health. Therefore, it is used for the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders and improvement of mucosal damage.
Dosage
For adults: cimetidine 400 mg orally twice a day (morning and at bedtime) or 800 mg once a day (at bedtime). Additionally, it can be administered as 300 mg orally four times a day (after meals and at bedtime). The dose can be increased to 400 mg orally four times a day (after meals and at bedtime) (total 1.6 g). For acute gastritis and acute exacerbations of chronic gastritis, 200 mg twice a day or 400 mg once a day may be used.
Precautions
This medicine contains the ingredient cimetidine and should not be administered to certain patients. For instance, patients who are allergic to this medicine or cimetidine, or have experienced hypersensitivity reactions, patients taking the medication dofetilide, and patients with lactose intolerance or specific genetic metabolic disorders may be at risk if they use this medicine. Patients with impaired kidney or liver function, a history of drug allergies, the elderly, children under 19 years of age, and patients undergoing dialysis should be particularly cautious when using this medicine and may require dosage adjustments or modification of the dosing interval. This medicine can affect multiple organs such as blood, liver, and kidneys and may cause side effects like leukopenia, liver dysfunction, kidney dysfunction, allergic reactions, gastrointestinal symptoms, neurological symptoms, and skin reactions; thus, any adverse symptoms should be discussed with medical personnel immediately. Furthermore, long-term or high-dose use of this medicine may obscure symptoms of gastric cancer, so it is advisable to confirm the absence of malignant diseases before use. Patients with Helicobacter pylori infection should undergo eradication therapy concurrently. This medicine may interact with several other drugs; therefore, when taken alongside warfarin, midazolam, diazepam, beta-blockers, antidepressants, antibiotics, antifungals, and antidiabetic medications, dosage adjustments or discontinuation may be necessary. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should only use this medicine if the therapeutic benefits outweigh the risks, and it is recommended to discontinue breastfeeding during treatment. In cases of overdose, serious side effects such as respiratory depression may occur, so immediate emergency measures should be taken, and it should be stored out of the reach of children to prevent accidents. Finally, elderly patients or those with decreased kidney function may experience delayed elimination of this medicine, so dosage may need to be reduced or dosing intervals increased for cautious use.
