Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients with hypersensitivity to certain components or those allergic to hydroxyzine or piperazine derivatives. It is also advisable for patients with end-stage renal disease or those undergoing dialysis to avoid taking this medication. Do not administer to infants under 1 year of age, and children under 6 years old should use the liquid form instead of tablets. The liquid formulation contains maltitol, so patients who are congenitally intolerant to fructose should avoid taking it. Patients with renal or liver function problems, as well as the elderly, should use this medication cautiously as it may remain in the body for long periods leading to side effects. This medication may cause central nervous system symptoms such as drowsiness, headache, and dizziness, thus caution is needed when driving or operating machinery. Gastrointestinal symptoms such as dry mouth, dyspepsia, abdominal pain, and diarrhea may also occur. Rare cardiovascular adverse effects such as increased heart rate or arrhythmias, hypertension may occur as well. Blood-related issues or allergic reactions, skin rashes, itching, and blurred vision have also been reported. For pregnant women, the safety for the fetus is unclear, so it should be used with caution after consulting a doctor. Breastfeeding mothers should also be cautious since this medication may be passed to breast milk and affect the baby. This medication can enhance sedative effects when taken with alcohol or antidepressants, so co-administration is not recommended. Patients with epilepsy or those at risk of seizures should be careful as their symptoms may worsen after taking this medication. Before taking this medication, it is advisable to stop taking it 3-5 days prior to planning clinical tests such as allergy testing. In the event of overdose, symptoms such as drowsiness or restlessness may appear; there is no specific antidote, so treatment should be symptomatic. Since it is difficult to remove this medication through dialysis, appropriate management in a hospital setting is necessary in case of overdose.
