Treatment of severe infections (endocarditis, pneumonia, etc.) and antibiotic-associated pseudomembranous colitis.
This medication is used to treat various severe infections caused by a range of bacteria. It is effective against Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, Clostridium difficile, and diphtheroid infections. It is used for endocarditis, osteomyelitis, arthritis, peritonitis, meningitis, and superficial secondary infections resulting from burns or surgical wounds, as well as serious pulmonary infections such as pneumonia, sepsis, and lung abscesses. It is also effective against severe infections that are difficult to treat with penicillin or cephalosporin antibiotics. Notably, it can be used to treat orally-acquired antibiotic-associated pseudomembranous colitis caused by Clostridium difficile.
Adults: For vancomycin, administer 500mg (the potency) via intravenous drip every 6 hours or 1g (the potency) every 12 hours. For oral administration to treat antibiotic-associated pseudomembranous colitis caused by Clostridium difficile and small bowel colitis, administer 500-2000mg per day divided into 3-4 doses for 7-10 days without exceeding a total daily dose of 2g.
Children: Administer 10mg (the potency) per kg body weight via intravenous injection every 6 hours. Infants: Administer 10-15mg (the potency) per kg body weight via intravenous injection every 12 hours. Infants and neonates require a dose of 15mg per kg initially.
This medication should not be used in patients who have experienced severe allergic reactions or shock due to this drug or similar antibiotics. Additionally, it should be used cautiously in patients with hearing impairment, reduced kidney function, liver problems, elderly patients, premature infants, and neonates. Rare side effects such as dizziness, hearing loss, skin rash, liver function abnormalities, and decreased kidney function may occur during treatment, thus regular monitoring is necessary. Due to the risk of hearing and kidney damage, treatment should be immediately stopped and appropriate care sought if related symptoms appear. This medication must be administered intravenously, and it is important to infuse it slowly to avoid hypotension or cardiac issues that may result from rapid administration. Also, using this medication with certain specific drugs may increase side effects, so it should be discussed with a physician or pharmacist. Women who are pregnant or nursing should use this medication cautiously, as it may affect the fetus or newborn, and breastfeeding is ideally discontinued. In children and elderly patients, since kidney function may be compromised, dosage adjustment and caution are necessary. In cases of overdose, kidney impairment or hearing damage may occur, and immediate medical assistance is required. Long-term use of this medication may result in antibiotic resistance, so it is advisable to confirm the sensitivity of the bacteria and use it only for the necessary duration. During treatment, regular blood tests, liver function tests, and kidney function tests should be conducted to promptly identify and manage any adverse reactions. If symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, or fever occur, they may indicate serious side effects like pseudomembranous colitis and should be reported to a doctor immediately.
