Treatment of herpes zoster; treatment of genital herpes and suppression of recurrence
This medication is used to treat herpes zoster virus infections and genital herpes infections. It also helps prevent the recurrence of recurrent genital herpes. In other words, this drug is effective in alleviating symptoms caused by herpes zoster and genital herpes and suppressing their recurrence.
1. Treatment of herpes zoster Adults: Administer famciclovir 250 mg per dose orally 3 times daily for 7 days. It is preferable to start treatment as soon as symptoms appear after infection. 2. Treatment of initial genital herpes infection Adults: Administer this medicine 250 mg per dose orally 3 times daily for 5 days. It is preferable to start treatment as soon as symptoms appear after infection. 3. Treatment of acute recurrent genital herpes infection Adults: Administer this medicine 125 mg per dose orally twice daily for 5 days. It is preferable to start treatment during the prodromal period or as soon as symptoms appear after infection. 4. Suppression of recurrent genital herpes Adults: Administer this medicine 250 mg per dose orally twice daily. Periodically discontinue treatment every 6~12 months to assess whether the natural course of the disease has changed. 5. Patients with renal impairment: Since creatinine clearance of this medicine is decreased in patients with renal impairment, dose adjustment should be undertaken with care. The dosage and administration for these patients are as follows. 1) Treatment of herpes zoster and initial genital herpes infection: Creatinine clearance (mL/min/1.73㎡) Dose 30~59 250 mg per dose, twice daily 10~29 250 mg per dose, once daily 2) Treatment of acute recurrent genital herpes infection: Creatinine clearance (mL/min/1.73㎡) Dose 30~59 125 mg per dose, twice daily 10~29 125 mg per dose, once daily 3) Suppression of recurrent genital herpes infection: Creatinine clearance (mL/min/1.73㎡) Dose 30~59 250 mg per dose, twice daily 10~29 125 mg per dose, twice daily 4) If only serum creatinine is known, creatinine clearance can be calculated using the following formulas. Men: {body weight (kg) × (140-age)}/ {72 × serum creatinine (mg/dL)} Women: 0.85 × the value calculated for men 5) Patients with renal impairment undergoing hemodialysis It is preferable to administer the medicine every 48 hours, taking the dialysis interval into account. Since 4 hours of hemodialysis reduces the plasma concentration of this medicine by approximately 75%, administer it immediately after dialysis. The recommended dose is 250mg for patients with herpes zoster and 125mg for patients with genital herpes. 6. Patients with hepatic impairment: No dose adjustment is required in patients with chronic compensated liver disease. There is insufficient treatment experience in patients with overt chronic decompensated liver disease; therefore, a clear recommended dose has not been established.
This medication should not be used in patients who have had hypersensitivity reactions to this drug, its components, or the active substance, penciclovir. Special care should be taken when administering this drug to patients with renal impairment. Symptoms such as headache or nausea may occur with this medication, which are usually mild to moderate. Moreover, caution is advised as there might be a decrease in blood cell counts or neurological symptoms such as dizziness, drowsiness, or hallucinations. Common gastrointestinal side effects include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Liver function abnormalities, skin rashes, and itching have also been reported frequently, so if there are any abnormal symptoms, consult a physician immediately. Acute renal failure may rarely occur in patients with renal impairment, so dosage adjustments based on renal function are necessary. This drug does not cure genital herpes, so it is crucial to avoid sexual contact when symptoms are present and maintain safe sexual practices. If experiencing dizziness, drowsiness, or confusion while taking this medication, avoid driving or operating machinery. Patients with mild to moderate liver impairment typically do not require dosage adjustments; however, patients with severe liver disorders may experience reduced efficacy of the drug. This drug does not have significant interactions with other medications, but when taken with certain drugs, blood concentration changes should be monitored, and dosage adjustments may be needed. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should carefully weigh the risks and benefits of using this medication, and this also applies if breastfeeding. Children under 18 should generally not use this medication as safety and efficacy have not been established. In elderly patients, dosage adjustments are generally not needed, but dosage should be adjusted if renal function is impaired. In cases of overdose, seek medical assistance immediately, and blood dialysis can reduce the concentration of the drug. This medication should be stored in a cool, dry place below 30 degrees Celsius, away from children's reach. Care should be taken when transferring the medication to another container as this may affect its quality.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
