Treatment of respiratory infections, genitourinary infections, and improvement of soft tissue infections
This medication is effective in treating infections caused by various bacteria. It is widely used for respiratory infections including acute and chronic bronchitis, lobar and bronchopneumonia, sinusitis, as well as urinary tract infections such as cystitis, urethritis, and pyelonephritis. Additionally, it helps in the treatment of pelvic infections, gonorrhea, and skin/soft tissue infections like boils, abscesses, and wound infections. It is also effective for severe osteomyelitis and dental infections, making it useful for overall infection management. Considering these points, this medication significantly contributes to improving patient symptoms in response to various bacterial infections.
Adults and children aged 12 or over or weighing 40 kg or more: Amoxicillin/Clavulanate potassium 250 mg/125 mg orally every 8 hours, three times a day; dosage may be increased to 500 mg/125 mg for severe or respiratory infections. In cases of kidney impairment, dosage must be adjusted based on creatinine clearance. - Creatinine clearance of 30 mL/min or more: No adjustment needed.
Same as adults and children aged 12 or over or weighing 40 kg or more, with dosage reduction in cases of kidney impairment.
This medication is a beta-lactam antibiotic and should not be administered to individuals with a history of allergy to penicillin-based drugs. Particular caution is needed in cases of severe hypersensitivity reactions such as anaphylaxis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, or shock. It should be avoided in patients with viral infections such as infectious mononucleosis or lymphocytic leukemia due to a higher risk of rash. Patients with a history of liver dysfunction or jaundice may be at risk for relapse; hence, it is better to avoid this medication. For patients with impaired liver function or severe kidney disease, dosage adjustment and careful monitoring are required due to the potential for increased drug concentration. Caution is advised for those with allergic tendencies, difficulty in oral intake, the elderly, and patients with poor overall health, as side effects like vitamin K deficiency may occur. In patients presenting gastrointestinal symptoms such as vomiting or diarrhea, careful administration is necessary as drug absorption may be impeded. This medication may cause gastrointestinal side effects, including diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal pain, and, although rarely, serious enteritis such as pseudomembranous colitis may develop, hence immediate discontinuation is warranted on symptom occurrence. Liver function abnormalities have also been reported; therefore, regular liver function tests are needed for the elderly or those on long-term treatment. Severe skin reactions such as rash, urticaria, and in severe cases, Stevens-Johnson syndrome may occur, necessitating the immediate cessation of the medication if unusual symptoms arise. Blood-related abnormalities such as leukopenia, anemia, and thrombocytopenia have been reported rarely, and periodic blood tests may be required. Central nervous system-related adverse effects may include agitation, anxiety, confusion, and seizures; special caution is necessary for patients with compromised kidney function or those receiving high doses. Regular testing is required for kidney disease patients as this medication may affect kidney function, and treatment should be stopped in case of adverse signs. This medication can disrupt intestinal flora, leading to symptoms like candidiasis and necessitating appropriate treatment when symptoms occur. A bleeding tendency due to vitamin K deficiency may manifest, urging caution for patients at risk of bleeding. This medication may interact with other drugs; thus, consultation with a doctor during concomitant administration is advised, especially for patients on anticoagulants who should have their blood coagulation status checked regularly. The use during pregnancy should be carefully considered based on risk, and for those breastfeeding, side effects may occur in infants, necessitating the cessation of administration if adverse reactions develop. It is not recommended for children under 12 years old or those weighing less than 40 kg, and caution with dosing frequency and amount should be taken for the elderly due to decreased physiological function, increasing the risk of side effects. In case of overdose, symptoms such as gastrointestinal issues, renal failure, seizures, and hypersensitivity shock may appear, requiring immediate communication with healthcare providers for appropriate management. This medication should be stored in a dry place below 25 degrees Celsius; monitoring for the occurrence of resistant bacteria and liver or kidney function abnormalities during long-term use is important.
