Hyperkalemia refers to a condition where the potassium level in the blood is higher than normal. This medication helps to regulate hyperkalemia and maintain blood potassium levels within the normal range. Therefore, it is used to prevent and treat symptoms caused by hyperkalemia, such as cardiac rhythm disturbances and muscle weakness.
Dosage
Administer calcium polysulfone at a dose of 15-30g per day, divided into 2-3 doses orally. Adjust appropriately according to age and symptoms.
Precautions
This medication should not be used in patients with hypercalcemia. It should also be avoided in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism or multiple myeloma as it may elevate blood calcium levels. It is advisable not to use this medication in patients with sarcoidosis or metastatic cancer, as there is a risk of intestinal perforation. Oral administration is prohibited in newborns under one month old, and only rectal administration is permitted in newborns with decreased gastrointestinal motility. Patients with frequent constipation, intestinal obstruction, or gastrointestinal ulcers should use this medication with caution. This medication may cause side effects such as constipation, nausea, loss of appetite, and hypokalemia, so patients should consult a doctor if symptoms appear. Particularly, if there is severe abdominal pain or vomiting suggestive of intestinal perforation or obstruction, administration should be stopped immediately. Regularly check serum potassium and calcium levels; if abnormalities are found, adjust or discontinue the dose. Dialysis patients or chronic renal failure patients receiving calcium resins should be cautious of the risk of hypercalcemia. When taken orally, the patient should be in an upright position to reduce the risk of aspiration. This medication may interfere with the absorption of other oral medications, so it should be taken with a 3-hour interval from other drugs. It is not recommended for patients with decreased gastrointestinal motility after surgery. When used with digitalis or digoxin, the risk of toxicity may increase due to lowered serum potassium, so it should be administered cautiously. When combined with aluminum, magnesium, calcium-containing antacids, or laxatives, the effectiveness of this medication may be reduced, and systemic alkalosis may occur. Safety for pregnant or breastfeeding women has not been established, so caution is required. Elderly patients may have diminished bodily functions, so the dosage should be adjusted accordingly. In cases of overdose, symptoms of hypokalemia and cardiac abnormalities may occur, requiring immediate treatment and measures to restore serum potassium and calcium levels to normal. When taken orally, colonic obstruction or ulcers may occur, so attention should be paid to preventing constipation. When administered rectally, avoid using sorbitol solution and ensure that no medication remains in the gastrointestinal tract afterward.
