Adult dosage
1. Oral administration As calcium polystyrene sulfonate, 15-30g should be divided into 2-3 doses daily, suspended in 30-50 mL of water for oral administration. 2. Rectal administration As calcium polystyrene sulfonate, 30g should be suspended in 100 mL of water or 2% methylcellulose solution for rectal administration. The suspension should be warmed to body temperature and retained in the intestines for 30 minutes to 1 hour. If any liquid leaks out, use a pillow to elevate the buttocks.

Hyperkalemia refers to a condition where the potassium level in the blood exceeds the normal range. This condition can increase the risk of symptoms such as muscle weakness and arrhythmias, thus requiring appropriate treatment. This medication is used to prevent or treat hyperkalemia.

Dosage

Precautions

This medication should not be administered to patients with hypercalcemia who have high calcium levels in their blood or patients with primary hyperparathyroidism. Patients with multiple myeloma, sarcoidosis, or metastatic carcinoma should use caution as this medication may increase serum calcium levels. It is advisable not to administer this medication to patients with obstructive intestinal diseases due to the risk of intestinal perforation. Neonates under 1 month should avoid oral administration, and those with decreased gastrointestinal motility can only be given rectal administration. Patients who frequently experience constipation, intestinal obstruction, or gastrointestinal ulcers should use this medication with caution as there is a risk of intestinal blockage or worsening symptoms. This medication can cause various adverse reactions such as constipation, loss of appetite, nausea, and hypokalemia, and any symptoms should be promptly consulted with a healthcare professional. Particularly, if severe abdominal pain, constipation, or vomiting suggestive of intestinal perforation or obstruction occurs, administration should be stopped, and appropriate treatment sought. Serum potassium and calcium levels should be regularly monitored, and if abnormalities are found, dosage adjustments or discontinuation of administration should be taken. Dialysis patients receiving calcium resins or those with chronic kidney failure are at risk for hypercalcemia and require special caution. Patients should be instructed to take the medication in an upright position to reduce the risk of aspiration during oral administration. This medication may interfere with the absorption of other oral medications, therefore it should be taken with a gap of at least 3 hours from other medications. The use of this medication is not recommended for patients whose gastrointestinal motility is decreased after surgery or due to drugs. Caution is necessary when combined with digitalis or digoxin, as it may increase the risk of toxicity due to serum potassium reduction. Taking this medication with aluminum, magnesium, calcium-containing antacids or laxatives may reduce its effectiveness or cause systemic alkalosis. Safety in pregnant or nursing women has not been established, so it should be used with caution. Elderly patients may have reduced bodily functions, so dosage adjustments and caution are necessary. In cases of overdose, severe hypokalemia symptoms and ECG abnormalities may occur, requiring immediate appropriate treatment. To prevent accumulation in the gastrointestinal tract during oral administration, care should be taken to avoid constipation, and during rectal administration, care should be taken to avoid residual waste without using sorbitol solution.
