Efficacy & effects
This medication is effective in the treatment of parasitic infections such as trichomoniasis and amoebiasis. It is also used for intra-abdominal infections like peritonitis, intra-abdominal abscess, and liver abscess, as well as skin and soft tissue infections, and gynecological infections such as endometritis. It is effective in severe infection conditions including sepsis, brain abscess, pneumonia, and bone and joint infections, and plays an important role in the treatment of infections caused by anaerobic bacteria and in preventing postoperative infections. This drug is sensitive to anaerobic Bacteroides and Streptococcus, making it useful for various conditions including bacteremia and necrotizing pneumonia, osteomyelitis. It is used for improving and treating infections in complex and diverse infection states.
Dosage
Trichomoniasis: For metronidazole, the normal dosage for adults is 250 mg orally, twice daily for 10 days. For treatment of anaerobic infections: The usual adult dose is 500 mg orally, 3 to 4 times a day. The maximum daily dose should not exceed 4 g, and treatment generally continues for 7 to 10 days. For prevention of anaerobic infections after surgery: The usual initial dose for adults is 1 g, followed by 250 mg orally, once daily.
Precautions
This drug should be avoided due to reports of tumor incidence in rodent studies. In patients with cocaine syndrome, there is a high risk of hepatotoxicity, hence liver function tests must be conducted before, during, and after treatment. If liver function worsens, administration should be stopped immediately. This drug should not be used in cases of hypersensitivity, blood disorders, neurological disorders, early pregnancy, or during breastfeeding. Especially when taken with alcohol, severe reactions may occur, so alcohol intake should be avoided for 3 days during and after treatment. Patients with impaired kidney or liver function should use this drug cautiously as it may lead to adverse reactions such as skin rash, gastrointestinal issues, neurological symptoms, and blood abnormalities. Symptoms like confusion, drowsiness, hallucinations, and seizures warrant avoidance of driving or operating machinery, and regular check-ups are recommended for prolonged use over 10 days. This drug may interact with other medications, so patients should consult their physician or pharmacist if they are on other medications. It should not be used in early pregnancy, and breastfeeding should be halted for more than 24 hours after administration.
Side effects
Urticaria, severe swelling (angioedema), mucocutaneous syndrome (Stevens-Johnson syndrome), toxic epidermal necrolysis (Lyell's syndrome), acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis, anaphylaxis, shock, pancreatitis, encephalopathy, subacute cerebellar syndrome, jaundice, cholestatic hepatitis, aseptic meningitis, convulsions, confusion, hallucinations, severe allergic reactions, severe skin adverse reactions, severe neurological symptoms, liver abnormalities (jaundice).
