Dosage

Oral: The initial dose is 0.5-1 mg per day of benztropine mesylate taken orally. Then, increase the dose gradually by 0.5 mg daily every 5-6 days to maintain the dose. The maintenance dose should be determined considering the improvement of symptoms and the occurrence of side effects, and should not exceed 6 mg per day. Adjust according to age and symptoms. Injectable: The initial dose is 0.5-1 mg per day of benztropine mesylate administered via intramuscular or intravenous injection.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients with glaucoma, those allergic to this drug, patients with myasthenia gravis, and children under 3 years of age. Additionally, as this medication contains lactose, it should not be administered to patients with galactose intolerance or certain genetic lactose metabolism disorders. It should be used with caution in patients with obstructive uropathy such as benign prostatic hyperplasia, heart problems such as arrhythmias or tachycardia, patients with liver or kidney dysfunction, elderly patients, and children older than 3 years. It should also be administered cautiously in patients who are in hot environments or prone to sweating suppression, and those allergic to Yellow 4 (tartrazine) should also be careful. Use of this medication may lead to neurological symptoms such as difficulty in motor control, mental confusion, hallucinations, consciousness disorders, anxiety, depression, and sensory disturbances in the extremities. Additionally, it may cause gastrointestinal symptoms such as dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, constipation, and urinary difficulties or diminished urine output. If there is an allergic reaction such as skin rash, discontinue the medication immediately, and there may also be disturbances in eye accommodation. When starting this medication, begin with a small dose and gradually increase it while closely monitoring the patient's condition, and do the same when switching from another medication to this one. Regular eye examinations are recommended during the use of this medication to monitor for changes in intraocular pressure. Furthermore, unlike some Parkinson's disease treatments, this medication does not alleviate involuntary movements around the mouth and may sometimes exacerbate symptoms. As the medication may impair attention, concentration, and reflexes, avoid driving vehicles or operating hazardous machinery while taking this medication. This medication may enhance the effects of certain psychiatric drugs or antidepressants and monoamine oxidase inhibitors, so caution is needed. Additionally, combining this medication with other anticholinergic drugs may severely disrupt bowel function, leading to severe constipation, abdominal distension, or intestinal obstruction; if any of these symptoms occur, discontinue use immediately. It is safer for women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, as well as nursing mothers, not to take this medication.
