Dosage

(Oral) The initial dose is 0.5-1 mg per day of benztropine mesylate taken orally. Then gradually increase by 0.5 mg per day at intervals of 5-6 days to maintain a dose. The maintenance dose is determined considering symptom improvement and the occurrence of side effects and should not exceed 6 mg per day. Adjust as appropriate based on age and symptoms. (Injection) The initial dose is 0.5-1 mg per day of benztropine mesylate administered by intramuscular or intravenous injection.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients with glaucoma, hypersensitivity to this drug, severe myasthenia gravis patients, and infants under 3 years of age. Also, this medication contains lactose, so it should not be given to patients with genetic issues such as galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency, or glucose-galactose malabsorption. Patients with urinary obstructive conditions such as prostate enlargement, arrhythmias, tachycardia, those with liver or kidney dysfunction, elderly patients, children over 3 years, and those in hot environments should use this medication cautiously. While taking this medication, mental confusion, hallucinations, consciousness disorders, anxiety, and depression may occur, so caution is advised. Gastrointestinal effects may include dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, and constipation, while urinary effects may lead to difficulty urinating or urinary retention. Additionally, if hypersensitivity reactions such as rashes occur, the medication should be discontinued, and there may also be difficulty in eye accommodation. When starting the medication, it should be gradually increased from a small amount, and if switching from another medication, it should also be adjusted slowly. During treatment, regular eye examinations and intraocular pressure measurements are recommended. Unlike certain antiparkinsonian drugs, this medication may not alleviate some involuntary movement symptoms and could even worsen them. During the use of this medication, attention and reflexes may decrease, so driving or operating dangerous machinery should be avoided. Furthermore, co-administration with phenothiazine drugs, tricyclic antidepressants, MAO inhibitors, and resperidine derivatives may enhance its effects, so caution is required. Co-administration with anticholinergic drugs may result in severe bowel paralysis symptoms, and if such symptoms arise, the medication should be discontinued. Pregnant women or those who may become pregnant, as well as nursing mothers, should not take this medication.
