Hyperkalemia refers to an abnormally high potassium concentration in the blood. This medication helps to manage hyperkalemia and maintain blood potassium levels within the normal range. Therefore, it is used for the treatment of hyperkalemia.
Dosage
1. Oral administration: Administer 15-30g of Polystyrene Sulfonate Calcium daily divided into 2-3 doses, suspending the single dose in 30-50 mL of water for oral intake. 2. Rectal administration: Suspend 30g in 100 mL of water or 2% methylcellulose solution for rectal administration. Warm the suspension to body temperature and retain it in the rectum for 30 minutes to 1 hour. If leakage occurs, elevate the buttocks with a pillow or hold the position temporarily.
Precautions
This medication should not be used in patients with hypercalcemia or primary hyperparathyroidism. The reason is that this medication can increase calcium levels in the blood. Patients with multiple myeloma, sarcoidosis, or metastatic carcinoma should also not receive this medication. Additionally, patients with obstructive bowel disease should avoid use due to the risk of intestinal perforation. Newborns under 1 month should avoid oral administration, while those with decreased gastrointestinal motility can only receive rectal administration. Caution should be exercised in patients with frequent constipation, bowel obstruction, or gastrointestinal ulcers. This medication has been commonly reported to cause side effects such as constipation, loss of appetite, nausea, and hypokalemia, so care should be taken. In particular, if severe constipation, abdominal pain, or vomiting occurs, administration should be discontinued immediately, and a doctor should be consulted. Regular monitoring of potassium and calcium levels in the blood is necessary to adjust the dosage or discontinue administration if abnormalities are found. Patients undergoing dialysis or with chronic kidney failure should be careful as hypercalcemia may occur. When taken orally, patients should be advised to take the medication while standing to reduce the risk of aspiration. Also, this medication can interfere with the absorption of other oral medications, so it should be taken at least 3 hours apart from other drugs. It is not recommended for patients with decreased gastrointestinal motility after surgery. Caution is required when used alongside medications such as digoxin or digitalis, as it may increase toxicity due to a decrease in blood potassium levels. When taken with antacids or laxatives containing aluminum, magnesium, or calcium, the effectiveness of this medication may be reduced. The safety for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding has not been established, so caution is advised. In elderly patients, special care should be taken to reduce dosage as physical functions may decrease. In the case of overdose, symptoms of hypokalemia and heart abnormalities may appear, necessitating immediate appropriate treatment. When taken orally, care should be taken to prevent drug accumulation in the gastrointestinal tract, and when administered rectally, sorbitol solution should not be used. It is important to ensure that no drug remains in the gastrointestinal tract after administration.
