This medication is used to replenish fluids in cases of dehydration, particularly when there is a lack of bodily fluids. It is also used to dilute or dissolve injections. Therefore, patients will find it helpful to use this medication for fluid replenishment and safe administration of injections.
Dosage
Administer 500 to 1000 mL intravenously at a rate of no more than 0.5 g/kg per hour as dextrose. Use an appropriate amount for the dilution of the injection. Adjust dosage appropriately based on age and symptoms.
Precautions
This medication can introduce glass fragments when cutting open an ampoule, so caution is required, especially when used for children or the elderly. Patients receiving intravenous administration of this medication containing dextrose are at risk of rapid depletion of vitamin B1, leading to severe deficiency; therefore, caution is necessary. This medication should not be administered to patients with certain diseases such as storage dehydration, excessive fluid retention, hyperglycemia, acidosis, hypokalemia, hyperosmolar coma, and glucose intolerance. Additionally, it is contraindicated for patients with anuria, hepatic coma, or those who have hypersensitivity to this medication. Patients who are prone to potassium, phosphate, or magnesium deficiency, or those with hyponatremia, diabetes insipidus, renal failure, heart failure, severe malnutrition, thiamine deficiency, sepsis, or severe trauma should use this medication cautiously. Rapid or excessive administration may cause electrolyte imbalances, dehydration, hyperosmolarity, hyperglycemia, and kidney damage, so precautions are advised. Prolonged administration may affect insulin secretion, requiring insulin administration for blood sugar control. During pregnancy, it should only be given when absolutely necessary due to risks to the fetus, and administration during labor should be carefully considered due to the risk of hyperglycemia and metabolic acidosis for both mother and newborn. Newborns, especially preterm or low birth weight infants, are at increased risk of hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia and their blood sugar levels should be closely monitored. Elderly patients should be given this medication more cautiously due to reduced bodily functions. Overdosage may result in symptoms of hyperglycemia or diabetes, necessitating insulin treatment. Subcutaneous injections may cause local irritation and circulatory failure, so it is advisable to avoid these. Any remaining medication after opening should be discarded. To reduce the risk of infection during injection, attention to hygiene is important, and warming the medication before use is advisable. When administering this medication, care should be taken to avoid mixing with other medications, as chemical or physical reactions may occur; thus, careful monitoring according to professional guidance is necessary. To prevent air embolism, it is safer not to connect injection containers in series.
Side effects
Hypokalemia, hyperosmolar coma, acidosis, dehydration, hyperosmolarity, diabetes insipidus accompanied by glucose detection, fluid or solute overload, fluid-electrolyte imbalance, congestion, pulmonary edema, hyperglycemia, renal loss, fever, phlebitis, thrombosis, blood leakage, pain at the injection site, uremia
