A cup of Americano (355 mL) contains approximately 5-10 kcal, significantly lower than a café mocha, which can reach 250 kcal. However, because it's low in calories, drinking it without restraint can make weight control difficult. Even if you don't gain weight, there's a risk of excessively high cholesterol levels.

 

Drinking too much Americano can have a negative effect on your hormones and make it difficult to control your appetite.

 

The caffeine in coffee increases heart rate and breathing rate when it enters the body, causing anxiety and tension.

 

This condition increases cortisol levels, also known as the stress hormone. High levels of cortisol interfere with the appetite-suppressing hormone leptin. This can lead to a persistent craving for dessert-like foods even when you're not hungry.


There is also a risk of high cholesterol levels.

 

Americano is made by diluting espresso with water. Espresso contains an oil called cafestol. When coffee is extracted with an espresso machine, the golden foam called "crema" floats on top, and this is where cafestol is abundant. It is known that excessive consumption of cafestol increases blood cholesterol levels. In fact, when the Netherlands Institute for Health Sciences had adult men and women drink five cups of coffee a day for four weeks, it was confirmed that cholesterol levels increased by 8% in men and 10% in women. A Norwegian study also found that people who drank three to five cups of coffee a day tended to have higher blood cholesterol levels than those who did not drink any, and this correlation was particularly pronounced in men.

 

Currently, it is thought that cafestol increases cholesterol levels by interfering with fat metabolism.

 

Our bodies use cholesterol produced in the liver to produce bile acids to digest fat. Cafestol inhibits bile acid synthesis, causing unnecessary cholesterol to accumulate in the body.

 

Despite its low calorie content, Americano should be consumed in moderation. It's best to limit yourself to two cups per day. The maximum daily caffeine intake for adults, as recommended by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, is 400 mg. This is equivalent to 3-4 cups of Americano.
