A cup of Americano (355mL) contains about 5 to 10 kcal, which is much lower than the 250 kcal in a Cafe Mocha. However, drinking it freely because of its low calorie content can make weight management difficult. Even if you don't gain weight, there is a risk of excessively high cholesterol levels.

 

Excessive consumption of Americanos can negatively affect hormones, making it difficult to regulate appetite properly.

 

Caffeine in coffee enters the body and increases heart rate and breathing rate, causing anxiety and tension.

 

This condition increases the level of cortisol, commonly known as the stress hormone. When cortisol secretion is high, it interferes with the function of leptin, a hormone that suppresses appetite. As a result, you may find yourself craving foods like desserts even when you're not hungry.


There is a risk of increasing cholesterol levels.

 

Americano is made by diluting espresso with water. Espresso contains an oily component called cafestol. When coffee is brewed with an espresso machine, a golden foam called 'crema' appears on top, which contains a high amount of cafestol. Excessive intake of cafestol is known to raise blood cholesterol levels. In fact, a study by the Netherlands Institute of Public Health and the Environment found that after four weeks of drinking five cups of coffee a day, cholesterol levels increased by 8% in men and 10% in women. People who drink 3 to 5 cups of coffee a day tend to have higher blood cholesterol levels than those who do not drink any, and this correlation was particularly pronounced in men, according to a Norwegian study.

 

Currently, it is suspected that Cafestol interferes with fat metabolism, leading to an increase in cholesterol levels.

 

Our body produces bile acids from cholesterol made in the liver to digest fats. Sitosterol inhibits bile acid synthesis, causing unnecessary cholesterol to remain in the body.

 

Even if it is low in calories, you should drink American coffee in moderation. It is best to limit yourself to no more than two cups a day. The maximum daily caffeine intake for adults, as suggested by the Korea Food & Drug Administration, is 400mg. This is equivalent to 3 to 4 cups of American coffee.
