Is exercise necessarily beneficial for health?

Recently, I have developed a fundamental question about how exercise truly benefits health. Physical health is somewhat dependent on exercise, but sudden illnesses, such as cancer, seem to have no relation to exercise. Among diseases, some of the most fatal ones appear to be unrelated to exercise, leading me to think that they might be purely a matter of luck. This is not an attempt to justify not exercising.
