Is it mandatory to have regular checkups after a molar root canal?

It's been a while since I had a root canal on my molar.
I was wondering if I absolutely have to get regular checkups.
I'm not really in any pain right now, though.
It feels slightly strange when chewing occasionally.
I think I heard that root canal treatment is a one-time thing.
Or I'm confused because I've also heard that I need to keep managing it.
I am curious to know how those of you with experience handled this.
