Research has shown that increased exposure to light at night disrupts our circadian rhythms and increases our risk of death. Conversely, increasing exposure to sunlight during the day can promote health and longevity.
A research team at Monash University in Australia studied the association between daytime and nighttime light exposure and mortality in 89,000 people aged 40 to 69. The team tracked the participants' light exposure times and circadian rhythms for eight years.
The study found that people exposed to high levels of light at night had a 21-34% increased risk of death. Conversely, those who received sufficient sunlight during the day had a 17-34% reduced risk of death.
Exposure to light at night disrupts the body's central circadian rhythm by weakening and altering its timing. This increases the risk of cardiometabolic diseases, including metabolic syndrome, diabetes, obesity, myocardial infarction, stroke, and hypertension. Conversely, sunlight during the day stimulates insulin secretion and helps improve circadian rhythms, the research team explained.

“Avoiding light at night and getting enough sunlight during the day could reduce the burden of disease, particularly cardiometabolic disease, and increase longevity,” said study author Professor Andrew Phillips.
