Blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes and prevention of cardiovascular events
This medication is used in conjunction with dietary and exercise therapy to help control blood sugar in adult patients with type 2 diabetes. It can also be used in patients with cardiovascular disease; however, precautions regarding the occurrence of cardiovascular events must be strictly observed. Specifically, this medication effectively improves treatment for adult type 2 diabetes patients who have difficulties with blood sugar control.
The recommended dosage for this medication is 1 tablet per dose, taken twice daily. The dosage is determined considering each patient’s treatment regimen, efficacy, and tolerance while not exceeding the daily maximum recommended dosages of empagliflozin 25 mg and metformin 2000 mg. In cases where adequate blood sugar control is not achieved with metformin alone or in combination with other medications, it is recommended to take empagliflozin 5 mg twice daily along with the usual dose of metformin. When tolerance is good, empagliflozin may be increased to 25 mg (total 25 mg per day).
This medication is used for diabetes treatment and has the potential to cause a rare but serious side effect known as severe lactic acidosis, so caution is advised. When used with other diabetes medications, hypoglycemia may occur, so blood glucose levels should be closely monitored. Patients with allergies to any components of this medication, those with moderate to severe renal impairment, or those with acute cardiac issues or severe infections should not use this product. Use of this medication should be suspended around the time of diagnostic tests using radiological contrast agents, and it may be resumed only after confirming normal kidney function. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not take this medication. Patients with impaired kidney function or those at risk of fluid loss should exercise extra caution when taking this medication and should regularly monitor kidney function through blood tests. During treatment, side effects such as hypoglycemia, urinary tract infections, genital infections, increased urination, gastrointestinal disturbances (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, etc.) may occur. If any abnormal symptoms arise, immediate consultation with healthcare professionals is required. Particularly, if symptoms of lactic acidosis or ketoacidosis such as abdominal pain, respiratory distress, weakness, or vomiting occur, immediate treatment should be sought. This medication may cause fluid loss, so dehydration should be avoided, and adequate hydration should be maintained. When used with other glucose-lowering medications, the risk of hypoglycemia may increase, necessitating dosage adjustments. Alcohol consumption may increase the risk of lactic acidosis; therefore, drinking should be avoided during treatment. Elderly patients or those with reduced kidney function require special care when taking this medication, and regular monitoring of kidney function is recommended. In case of overdose, serious side effects, such as lactic acidosis, can occur, and immediate treatment at a hospital may be necessary, possibly including blood dialysis. This medication is not recommended for children and should be stored out of reach of children.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
