View approved original text

This medication is used for the treatment of adult patients with type 2 diabetes who do not achieve adequate blood glucose control with diet and exercise alone. It is particularly effective for overweight diabetes patients and can be used as monotherapy or in combination with other oral hypoglycemic agents or insulin to assist in blood glucose management. This helps to improve blood glucose levels and aids in the treatment of diabetes.

Precautions

This medication can rarely cause a very serious condition called lactic acidosis. Lactic acidosis occurs when there is an excessive buildup of lactic acid in the body and, if severe, can be life-threatening. Additionally, caution is needed when used with insulin or other diabetes medications due to the risk of hypoglycemia. Patients with moderate or severe renal impairment, dehydration, severe infections, or rapidly worsening cardiac function should not use this medication. Patients with acute heart failure or serious heart disease, and those who are scheduled for examinations using radiocontrast agents containing iodine, should discontinue or not use this medication. This medication should not be given to patients with allergy to its ingredients or to patients with type 1 diabetes, and those with metabolic acidosis. Patients with severe infections or trauma, who are in very poor condition, should temporarily discontinue this medication and resume after recovery. If surgery is planned, especially if eating or fluid intake is limited, this medication should be discontinued 48 hours before the surgery and should only be resumed after confirming normal kidney function post-surgery. Caution is also needed for patients with very poor nutritional status or problems with liver or adrenal function. During the course of this medication, kidney function should be regularly monitored, and it should be discontinued if kidney function deteriorates. Also, caution should be taken during irregular meals or vigorous exercise as there is a risk of hypoglycemia and lactic acidosis. Gastrointestinal symptoms (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, etc.) may occur frequently at the beginning of treatment but often improve naturally over time. This medication can cause vitamin B12 deficiency, so it is advisable to regularly check vitamin B12 levels. During pregnancy, it may affect the fetus, so if pregnancy is planned or if the patient is pregnant, the use of this medication should be discussed with a physician. During breastfeeding, since this medication is secreted in breast milk, it should be carefully decided whether to continue breastfeeding. Elderly patients often experience decreased kidney function, so drug dosage should be adjusted, and kidney function should be monitored frequently. In case of overdose, this medication can be removed by hemodialysis. If overdose is suspected, seek medical attention immediately. This medication may interact with other drugs, so if other medications are being taken, be sure to inform a physician or pharmacist.
