For prevention of herpes simplex infections in immunocompetent patients, can administer 200 mg four times a day at approximately six-hour intervals or 400 mg twice daily at 12-hour intervals. For prevention in immunocompromised patients, the dosage is adjusted accordingly.
Children aged 2 years and older should follow adult dosages. Children under 2 years should receive half the adult dosage. For treatment of chickenpox in children aged 2 years and older, administer 20 mg per kg of body weight (maximum 800 mg per dose) four times a day for 5 days.
