For adults, in the treatment of herpes simplex virus infections, administer 200 mg, five times a day at four-hour intervals for 5 days. For prevention of herpes simplex infections in immunocompetent patients, can administer 200 mg four times a day at approximately six-hour intervals or 400 mg twice daily at 12-hour intervals. For prevention in immunocompromised patients, the dosage is adjusted accordingly.
Children's dosage
Children aged 2 years and older should follow adult dosages. Children under 2 years should receive half the adult dosage. For treatment of chickenpox in children aged 2 years and older, administer 20 mg per kg of body weight (maximum 800 mg per dose) four times a day for 5 days.

This medication is used for the treatment and prevention of herpes simplex virus infections of the skin and mucous membrane, including primary and recurrent genital herpes. It is particularly effective for the treatment of herpes zoster virus infections, especially for alleviating acute pain. However, its efficacy for post-herpetic neuralgia has not yet been confirmed. It is also used for the treatment of chickenpox in children over 2 years of age. This medication effectively alleviates symptoms and aids in the treatment of various viral infections.

Dosage and Administration

Adult dosage

For adults, in the treatment of herpes simplex virus infections, administer 200 mg, five times a day at four-hour intervals for 5 days. For prevention of herpes simplex infections in immunocompetent patients, can administer 200 mg four times a day at approximately six-hour intervals or 400 mg twice daily at 12-hour intervals. For prevention in immunocompromised patients, the dosage is adjusted accordingly.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients who have had an allergic reaction to this medication or its components. Patients with impaired renal function may experience neurological symptoms when using this medication, so caution is advised. Patients with decreased liver function should use this medication carefully, as it can worsen liver function. Young infants and children should be particularly cautious when using this medication, and it should be used only when necessary and in minimal doses. Elderly patients may have reduced kidney function; therefore, dosage and dosing intervals should be adjusted accordingly, and adequate fluid intake is necessary. During the use of this medication, there may be rare occurrences of severe allergic reactions such as anaphylactic shock, so if symptoms such as low blood pressure, difficulty breathing, or chest pressure occur, administration should be stopped immediately and appropriate treatment sought. Skin rash, fever, blisters, and urticaria may occur, so if these symptoms arise, stop taking the medication and consult a physician. Rarely, serious skin reactions such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis may occur, so the condition of the skin should be carefully monitored. Psychological confusions, drowsiness, hallucinations, seizures, anxiety, and insomnia may occur, especially in elderly patients or those with decreased renal function. Renal impairment may lead to renal failure, hematuria, and proteinuria, so kidney function should be checked regularly. Blood-related issues such as leukopenia, anemia, bleeding, and purpura may occur, requiring periodic blood tests to monitor. Elevations in liver function test results or symptoms of hepatitis and jaundice may occur, necessitating ongoing monitoring of liver health. Gastrointestinal symptoms such as gastritis, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, or diarrhea may occur, and if severe, medication should be discontinued. General symptoms such as fever, muscle weakness, headache, and fatigue may occur, so general health should be closely monitored. Musculoskeletal pain or joint pain may occur. Cardiac abnormalities such as irregular heartbeat, blood pressure changes, and chest pain may occur, requiring attention to heart health. Difficulty urinating or urinary obstruction may infrequently occur, so urinary symptoms should also be carefully observed. This medication may interact with other drugs, so especially when used with medications that affect renal function or certain specific medications, consultation with a physician or pharmacist is recommended. Pregnant women or women who may become pregnant should consult a physician before using this medication, as it may pose risks to the fetus. During breastfeeding, this medication may be passed into breast milk, so it is advisable to stop breastfeeding while using it. In case of overdose, severe symptoms such as coma, seizures, or mental confusion may occur, requiring immediate medical attention. Adequate hydration during the use of this medication is essential to prevent dehydration and reduce the risk of kidney toxicity. Caution is advised during driving or operating hazardous machinery while taking this medication, as consciousness disturbances may occur.
