This medication is used to prevent and treat acute kidney failure that may occur during or after surgery, as well as after trauma. It also facilitates the excretion of toxic substances from the body in cases of drug overdose, providing a detoxifying effect. It is helpful in cases of elevated intracranial pressure or when reducing brain volume is necessary. Additionally, it is used to lower intraocular pressure in cases of increased pressure. It is used in various situations to improve bodily functions and aid in health recovery.
Dosage
As D-Mannitol, typically administer 1 to 3 g per kilogram of body weight by intravenous infusion of 15% or 20% solution. The maximum dose per day is set at 200 g. The infusion rate is to administer 100 mL over 3 to 10 minutes. Adjust dosage appropriately based on age and symptoms.
Precautions
This drug should not be administered to patients with acute intracranial hematoma or cerebral hemorrhage, and it can only be used when the cause of bleeding has been completely resolved. Use should also be avoided in patients with severe congestive heart failure, dehydration, fluid and electrolyte imbalances, pulmonary edema or pulmonary congestion, metabolic edema, and those who are anuric. It should not be administered to patients with hypersensitivity to this drug or its components. Caution is advised when administering to patients with impaired renal function, such as those with obstructive uropathy or diabetic nephropathy, patients with cranial injuries, children under 12 years of age, pregnant women, the elderly, and those with hypervolemia. This drug can affect the cardiovascular system, causing symptoms such as chest tightness, angina, tachycardia, and blood pressure abnormalities. Rarely, symptoms of intracranial pressure changes such as headache, nausea, vomiting, and dizziness may also occur. Additionally, renal-related adverse reactions such as acute kidney failure, anuria, and hematuria may occur, so renal function should be carefully monitored. Fluid and electrolyte imbalances may develop, and metabolic acidosis can occur in cases of overdose, thus electrolyte status should be continuously checked during administration. Patients with a history of allergies may experience severe hypersensitivity reactions, so administration should be immediately stopped if symptoms occur. This medication is administered only by intravenous injection, and care must be taken to prevent leakage of the solution outside the blood vessels. Mannitol is excreted by the kidneys, so extra caution is necessary for the elderly or patients with kidney disease with impaired renal function. Prior to administration, the patient's heart, kidney, and lung conditions must be evaluated, and fluid and electrolyte status should be regularly checked during administration. In cases of overdose, dehydration, acute kidney failure, heart failure, blood concentration, and acid-base imbalance may occur; if these symptoms appear, administration should be stopped immediately and appropriate treatment should be administered. This drug should be administered with caution to pregnant or breastfeeding women, and should only be used when the benefits outweigh the risks, if necessary. Additionally, caution is warranted when co-administering this drug with nephrotoxic drugs or other diuretics, as the risk of renal failure may increase. Patients' conditions should be continuously monitored during administration, and any unusual symptoms should be reported to healthcare professionals immediately.
