Blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes and prevention of cardiovascular events
This medication is used to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes whose condition is not adequately managed by diet and exercise alone, by using empagliflozin and metformin together. Furthermore, care should be taken when administering to patients with concurrent cardiovascular disease to confirm the impact on the occurrence of cardiovascular events. Therefore, this medication helps to manage blood sugar more effectively and reduce the risk of diabetes-related complications.
The dosage of this medication should not exceed the maximum daily amount of 25 mg of empagliflozin and 2000 mg of extended-release metformin hydrochloride, and should be determined considering each patient's treatment regimen, efficacy, and tolerability. This medication is taken once daily with dinner to reduce gastrointestinal adverse effects associated with metformin. 10/1000 mg extended-release tablets or 25/1000 mg extended-release tablets are taken once daily as 1 tablet.
This medication is used for the treatment of diabetes and helps lower blood sugar. When taking this medication, caution is advised as a rare side effect called severe lactic acidosis may occur. Lactic acidosis can lead to an excessive build-up of lactic acid in the body and can become dangerous, sometimes even life-threatening. Also, when taken with insulin or other sugar-lowering agents, hypoglycemia may occur, so blood sugar levels should be monitored closely. This medication should not be administered to patients with poor kidney function, acute infections, dehydration, or severe heart issues. It is especially prohibited in patients with moderate to severe renal impairment. Before receiving iodinated contrast agents used in radiological examinations, this medication should be discontinued, and it should not be readministered until renal function is confirmed to be normal after the examination. Scheduled surgeries or scenarios such as severe infections or trauma may require a temporary suspension of medication, with resumption after recovery. This medication contains lactose, so patients with hereditary issues like lactose intolerance should not take it. Regular kidney function tests should be conducted during treatment, especially for elderly patients or those at risk of declining kidney function. In situations with a risk of fluid loss, body status should be carefully monitored to prevent dehydration or hypotension. This medication may cause side effects such as genital and urinary tract infections, increased urination, liver function abnormalities, gastrointestinal disturbances (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, etc.), so any unusual symptoms should be discussed with a physician. Pregnant women or those with the potential to become pregnant, as well as nursing mothers, are advised against taking this medication. Elderly individuals are at risk for decreased kidney function and require dose adjustments and regular testing. In cases of overdose, serious side effects like lactic acidosis may occur, necessitating immediate hospital treatment, and blood dialysis may be required. This medication should be swallowed whole without crushing or chewing, and the tablet coating may be excreted but this is normal. Alcohol consumption during treatment should be avoided, and potential drug interactions with other medications should be discussed with a physician or pharmacist. While taking this medication, patients should pay close attention to symptoms of hypoglycemia or infection, and notify healthcare providers immediately if adverse symptoms occur.
