Blood glucose control in type 2 diabetes and prevention of cardiovascular events
This medication is used to assist in blood glucose control in adult patients with type 2 diabetes by combining empagliflozin with metformin. It is administered as an adjunct to dietary and exercise measures in patients where these alone do not provide sufficient glycemic control. Additionally, caution is advised in patients with concurrent cardiovascular disease due to the potential for cardiovascular events, and consultation with a specialist is recommended. This medication improves blood glucose control and aids in the treatment of diabetes.
The dose of this medication is determined within the range not exceeding the maximum recommended daily dose of empagliflozin 25 mg and prolonged-release metformin hydrochloride 2000 mg. This medication should be taken once daily in the evening with meals. The 10/1000 mg prolonged-release or 25/1000 mg prolonged-release tablets should be taken once daily, one tablet at a time. For the 5/1000 mg prolonged-release or 12.5/1000 mg prolonged-release tablets, patients should take two tablets concurrently once daily.
This medication is used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and helps to control blood sugar levels. Before taking this medication, kidney function should be assessed, and it should not be used if renal function is severely impaired. Patients in acute conditions such as severe infections, dehydration, acute myocardial infarction, or heart failure should also refrain from using this medication for safety reasons. There is a risk of hypoglycemia when used concurrently with insulin or sulfonylureas, so caution is necessary. This medication can cause a rare but serious side effect known as lactic acidosis, and if symptoms such as vomiting, abdominal pain, malaise, or difficulty breathing occur, it is important to consult a doctor immediately. Urinary tract infections and genital infections may occur, so prompt treatment is necessary if signs of infection appear. This medication can cause decreased fluid volume, leading to dehydration symptoms or low blood pressure, so water intake should be monitored. Patients with liver function issues or excessive alcohol consumption should avoid using this medication. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not take this medication, and breastfeeding should be discontinued while on this medication. Elderly patients may have an increased risk of kidney function impairment, so regular kidney function monitoring is necessary, and there is also a higher risk of hypoglycemia. This medication should be swallowed whole and not chewed or broken into pieces; it is normal for the tablet coating to appear in the stool. Before undergoing surgery or imaging tests involving iodinated contrast agents, this medication should be paused for a certain period, and resuming should occur after renal function recovery. There may be interactions with other medications, so it is crucial to inform the physician or pharmacist of any other medications being taken. In case of overdose, serious side effects may occur; therefore, immediate medical attention is required. If any unusual symptoms or discomfort arise during treatment, it is important to consult healthcare professionals immediately.
